July 31, 1988 Sun activates AIDS virus SASKATOON (CP) — Recent studies indicating direct sunlight may activate the AIDS virus should be taken seriously, a University of Saskatchewan researcher said. “I think there's something there,” said microbiologist Dr. Louis Qual- tiere. “If the virus is present, environmental influences or infec- tious agents may trigger its acti vity. Studies by researchers in the United States suggest ultraviolet light — direct sunlight or the ul- traviolet rays of a commercial tanning spa — may be a catalyst in transforming the AIDS virus from a latent or dormant state into an active, replicating and harmful state. When the research team exposed infected cell cultures to ultraviolet light, activity of the AIDS virus — Human y Virus, or the virus and infected HIV — in the cells increased 50 to 150 times, greatly enhancing opportun- for viral reproduction and growth, When the HIV-infected cells were exposed to direct sunlight for 30 minutes, viral activity in the cells was 12 times higher than in eontrol cells. Since HIV had been isolated in the epidermal cells of an AIDS patient, the researchers felt their laboratory findings could be clinically relevant. Qualtiere said many cells are dormant. “If you have a cell with a virus and you damage or stimulate that cell, you could conceivably turn on the virus. Qualtiere, who has been focusing his research on AIDS, said the U.S. udies were conducted in an arti: ficial lab situation but displayed good indirect results. The Federal Centre for AIDS has estimated that about 30,000 Cana- dians carty the HIV and evidence suggests 35 per cent of the carriers will develop AIDS within six years of infection. Canadawide, 1,022 of 1,830 people known to have the disease have died from AIDS. Dr. Roy West, executive director of the provincial laboratory and dis: ease control services, said the rate of new cases in Saskatchewan is not in, creasing.
