Island sold
to Japanese
Investors

The Castlegar News has learned that
famous Zuckerburg Island will be sold
to Japanese investors.

The deal, to be approved next month,
will see Castlegar’s historic landmark
turned over to Wi Phoole Yu Develop-
ment Corp. for $18.9 million.

The Tokyo-based firm plans to build a
150-suite hotel and casino by the spring
of 1998. The hotel and casino represents
a total investment of $42.3 million to the
localeconomy.

“We're excited about the acquisition,”
Yu spokesperson Loof Lirpa said. “It’s an
opportunity for us to expand our invest-
ments in North America.”

Lirpa said his firm is also negotiating
to purchase the Castlegar Golf Course
and turn it into a private club for Japan-
ese businessmen.

ment Board’s Richard Maddocks de-
fended the sale, saying people should

“Believe it or not, this is a good deal,”
he said. “It’s not some April Fool’s joke or
something like that.”
