In past years, production costs on tours could be bal- anced by ticket sales. But Cooper said bands started to outdo each other with com- plicated lighting and sound equipment and special effects that drove ticket prices up and sales down. Now touring costs are usually covered by record companies under various agreements, Bruce Rondeson of CBS yalties, If the record sells ihe company gets its money back. When the company wants to promote a band in a U.S. market, tour money may be advanced without any strings attached, Rondeson said. But if the record fails the com- pany can lose up to $50,000 and the band will be dropped from the company's roster, LOSES MONEY Rondeson said CBS usually loses money by producing and promoting Canadian bands. His company's profits are made by distributing records in. Canada for other labels, but signing Canadian bands drains the company's profits from distribution.
