VANCOUVER (CP) — A
popular tranquilizer, certain
hormones and some anti-
cancer drugs can cause cleft
lip and cleft palate in unborn
animals, says a University of
B.C. researcher.

The defects were induced
in unborn hamsters by inject-
ing diazepam, or Valium, and
some anti-cancer drugs into
the mothers ata specific time
during pregnancy, said Dr.
Ravindah Shah, a professor
of oral biology in the dentist-
ry faculty. Cortisone has
caused the same effect in
unborn hamsters, mice and
rats.

Cleft lip and cleft palate.

humans, occurring in one out
of every 600 to 800 live
births. The defect runs in
families, but scientists do not
know what causes it in cases
where it is not already in the
family. +

Shah said his evidence
does not necessarily mean
that these drugs will have
the same effect in humans,

but said other studies have -

linked diazepam to birth

After inducing the defects,
Shah studies cells to deter-
mine how the drugs cause the
defects in an effort to pre-
vent them in the future.

During fetus development,
bony and_ muscular tissue
grows from both sides of the
oral and nasal cavities and
joins together to form the
roof of the mouth or palate.
When the tissue fails to join,
a cleft lip, cleft palate, or
both, results.
