Every year, hundreds of
books in libraries. across
Canada are being quietly
challenged by parents or
special interest groups wor-
ried about: the’ content or
language.

J.D. Dalinger’s The Cat-
cher in The Rye and Mar-
garet Laurence's The Divin-
ers are among the most hot-
able books that have been
challenged by parents.

But a growing number of
other books, some of them
seemingly -innocent, are
being taken off the shelves in
libraries.

Even E.T., the Extra-
terrestrial, a book taken from
the popular children’s fan-
tasy-adventure movie, has
been banned in at least one
Manitoba school division be-
cause one of the characters, a
little girl, uses the words
“penis. breath.”
