John Walton, son of Dr. and Mrs. J.H. Walton, recently returned from a year’s exchange in South Africa, and Elizabeth Peter, older daughter of Brian and Diane Peter, of Natal, South Africa, both presented points of view on that troubled land. Both gave slide presentations which neatly complemented one another in a performance which would have been difficult to better. Walton, who admitted that his only prerequisite in a choice of host country had been that rugby was played there, had his wish fulfilled in South’ Africa. His host club, the Rotary Club of Stanger, is a small but active one with 24 members — 11 white, 11 East Indian and two black. It has its three continuing projects, black housing, black schools and the drilling of water wells for the people. Hi e glowingly of his four wonderful host families — two white and two East Indian, but missed the company of some’of the boys his age since all white males must take two years compulsory military training. After the family, the most important part of an exchange student's experience, he said, is the school. His school at Stanger was unusual in that it was co-ed, but does operate on the common, more formal British system which includes prefects and school uniforms. Also, in a school BOYS 2-PCE. Recognition was given to four home support workers, Helen Postnikoff, Evelyn Bullanoff, Alice Minnich and Debra Tomilin, who com- pleted a Hospice training workshop in March. Recently, there was some concern as to the adverse health effects from the con- tinuous frequent use of household cleaners. The guild is compiling a list of the most commonly used cleaners for which Medical Safety Data Sheets will be obtained from the manufacturers. A provincial training pro- gram for home support work- ers has been updated by Selkirk College and is ready to go. The program consists of 120 hours of instruction in preparing and serving nu- tritious meals, promoting household safety and clean- liness, providing assistance with activities of daily living, communicating with client, family and others, working responsibly, handling emer- gency situations, promoting activity and positive mental health, helping meet human needs. He mentioned that area Mental Health Centres re- cently welcomed the addition of a psychiatrist from Ire- land, who specializes in adult psychiatry. At the end of this month a psychiatrist special- izing in children and adol- escents will also be joining their staff. Cameron went on to ex- plain that emotional distur- bances and mental illness cannot be attributed to any single factor, but that the in- terplay of many factors pre- disposes an individual to the possibility of an emotional or mental problem sometime in his life. Counselling and/or medications are the most common forms of treatment for these disorders. Next month in-service training will be on home safety, to be Prevented by Lawrence Chernoff of th Provincial Ambulance Ser- vice.
