Students hit airwaves to deliver message Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Beverley Hills 90210 it’s not. “But we have potential,” said Jade Cropley, one member of Stanley Humphries Video Technology Club. The video club is the brain-child of John Eggleton, and is made up of 10 community conscious kids who have a focus on the future. “I’m in this club because I wanted to get involved with the community,” said Cropley. “And I have. I’ve met more people and become © more active,” she added. : The club has already done a service for the community by airing six shows on Shaw Cable, in conjunction with the Stanley Humphries Parent Advisory Council. The shows have ranged in theme from high school dropouts to teen drug abuse to AIDS, and have been well received. In fact, in a recent article, Bernice Beckstead of the PAC said that after the show Dropouts was finished “the calls were still coming in. We be to produce a followup program, Dropouts Their next show, focusing on Education Week, will be televised live on Monday, Mar. 2, and repeated again on Mar. 3 and 8. “I’ve been quite surprised,” said Mike McMann, Program Director at Shaw Cable. “They (the students) have been very professional. “If they stick to it and continue their education in the field, I’m sure they could have a future in T.V.” added McMann. “That’s why I got into the club,” said grade 12 student Christina Rowsell. “This experience is going to help me achieve my future goal — a career in Broadcast Communications.” she said. “T’ve started to watch T.V. with a critical eye,” said Rowsell. : “Now I really notice when someone screws up.” But not all of the club’s members want to be video jocks. “I hope to get into transportation engineering,” said Brian Port. “Video has nothing to do with that. I just had an interest in video, and I haven’t regretted joining the club.” As the 10 kids in the club will tell you, there are more reasons to join than there are members. “I joined to overcome my shyness,” said Allison Ritson. “And I guess I have. When I first started I was really scared, but working with the vid club has built my confidence a lot.” : What these students may have gained in’ ‘News photo by Glen Freeman Stanley Humphries Video Technology Club member Jade Cropley puts her video training to use, acti camera operator at the high school's student recognition ceremony Tuesday morning. ee : sede confidenee, they have lost in spare time. “These kids are extremely busy for just belonging to a club,”said Eggleton, Castlegar i School vice-principal. “But it’s impressive to watch these kids working with such sophisticated, technical machines in such creative ways,” said Eggleton. “T take a lot of pride in watching them work.” School club’s are known as a great distraction, but has all of this hi-tech tinkering hurt these students grades? “No, I don’t think so.” said grade 10 student ‘Cameron Foodikoff. “All of us get pretty good marks.” But ‘pretty good’ may be a bit of an understatement. Of the 10 students involved in the video club, six are a permanent fixture on the S.H Honor Roll. And, according to club president and co- ordinator Lorraine Paszty, they learn some things that are not on any high school curriculum. “Aside from the technical things we have learned, the video club has taught us imagination, creativity, co-operation, discipline, and patience. Those skills are invaluable,” she said, adding that she would like to see the club expanded. “I would like to see this club turn into a class. Then more students would be able to take advantage of it and benefit from it.” “Well, we’re working on that,” said Eggleton. “I think that video technology will be a main part of schooling in the future. Kids will get graded for it.” But in the meantime, the Video Technology Club at Stanley Humphries Secondary School is just for kicks. “Oh we have a lot of fun,” said Paszty. “And it’s very rewarding to see your final product on T.V. It’s too bad there aren’t more people in our club.” Club member Tammy Giles agrees, and has a word of advice for fellow S.H. students. “Watch us, and if you are at all interested, join ‘us,” she said. mene not be Beverley Hills 90210, but you'll e i
