Edith Marie Millar

On Thursday, April 29, 1993, Edith Marie
(Mary) Middlemass Kennedy Millar (nee
Byshik) beloved mother and grandmother
passed away in Royal Inland Hospital at the age
of 77 years

She was born October 26, 1915, in New York
moving to the Arrow Lakes area as a child with
her mother and step-father, Sutvived by daugh
ters; Edith Berg (Armand) of Grescent Valley,
B.C., Rosalie Middlemass (Harv Gilbert) of
Kamloops and Step-daughter Betty Wright
(Keith) of Gibson, BC, grandchildren; Laurence
and Stuart Berg, Cassandra McColm, Petra Bit
terlich, Gabrielle Decock and numerous great
grandchildren

She is also survived by brother George

Miskulin (Florence) of Nakusp, B.C. and sister

Elsia Newton (Tom) of Rossland, B.C. as well as
humerous nieces and nephews

Mary was predeceased by sistér Sadie Thomp
son (Greta) of Nakusp, former husbands,
Clarence William (Bill) Kennedy and Walter
Millar .

Cremation artangements are in care of
Schoening Funeral Service. No service by
request of deceased, however, there will be a cel
ebration of Mary's life at St. David's Anglican
Church Hall, Castlegar, B.C. on Saturday, May
22, 1993 at 2 p.m

Philippa Alice Mackereth

On Thursday, May 6, 1993, Philippa Alice Mack
ereth of Castlegar passed away at the age of 66
years.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, May 8,
1993 at St. David’s Anglican Church with Rev.
Arthur Turnbull officiating. Interment was at Pa ark
Memorial Cemetery

Mrs. Mackereth was born June 1, 1926 at Keli-
her, Saskatchewan. She moved with her parents to
Vancouver where she grew up and received her

_ schooling. Mrs. Mackereth taught school in Ques-

nel, Needles, and at Stanley Humphries Secondary
School. On August 24, 1956 she married Arthur
Mackereth at Lynn Valley, B.C. She lived in Broad-

water from 1956 until moving to Castlegar in 1962
She was/a member of the ACW of St. David's
Anglican Church and enjoyed reading and talking
with the children about their schooling

She is survived by her husband, Arthur of
Castlegar, one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and
Kimberley of Summerland, two grandchildren,
Veronica and Taylor, one brother, Brian Sibley of
Victoria

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to, can make
contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
Box 5023, Castlegar, BC VIN 1G8.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of
the Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

the tools you'll need:

*A 1%" or 2" well-made brush with
synthetic bristles (assuming that you
are applying latex paint);

*A cutung-in brush for precision
work that will help ydu"keep paint on
the window and off of the glass:

*A paint shield or masking tape, for
the same purpose,

*A single-edge razor to remove any
paint which may get onto the glass.

Double-hung windows

For double-hung windows, follow
these steps for exterior painting

|; Pull the top sash down and raise
the bottom sash, so that they’ overlap
by about six inches. Paint the bottom
horizontal section of the top sash, then
the accessible vertical members. (Note
Don’t allow paint to seep between the
sash and frame, as that can “glue” the
window in place.)

2. Nearly close the upper and lower
sash, then finish painting the rest of the
top sash .

Maybe you've just purchased a
Charming old “handyman’s special”
that was neglected for decades. Or per
haps you're about to paint a home
addition that was completed just a few
weeks ago

Either way, if you are planning to do
exterior painting involving weathered
wood, the Rohm and Hags Paint Quality
Institute has some advice that can help
you avoid some common pitfalls.

To the painting professional, “weath:
ered wood” means any type of bare
wood that has been exposed to the ele
ments for at least several weeks, up to

a number of years. It may have been
weathered purposefully, as with natural
cedar siding, or through neglect, such
as the bare wood that is exposed in the
wake of cracking and flaking paint

Surface preparation

Regardless, surface preparation a
critical aspect of any paint job takes
on added importance when painting
weathered wood. Only through good
surface preparation can your new paint
form a tight, enduring and protective

aged beyond repair, replace it before
proceeding. Use shellac to seal knots
and sap pockets in the replacement

The next step is to wash off any dust
or debris that remains. You can do this
the "old-fashioned" way by scrubbing
with a stiff brush or sponge, using
mild, soapy water. Or, if you are clean-

a power washer. This easy-to-use
equipment will speed up your work
tremendously. (Ask your rental agent
for his or her recommendations about
your specific painting project.)

If mildew is present — and it often
is in damp areas that don't get a lot of
sun wash it off with a mild bleach
solution (one part bleach to three parts
water). Then rinse and let dry

Use a quality primer
and top coat

Finally, the Paint Quality Institute
recommends that you apply a top qual
ity latex or alkyd primer to your weath-
ered wood surface, followed by a coat
of top quality acrylic latex exterior
paint. If the wood is cedar or redwood,
be sure to use a stain-resistant primer.
By using a quality primer and top
of-the-line acrylic latex topcoat, your
new paint job will look great for up to
10 years or more. And by not having to
paint as often, the few extra dollars
you'll spend to buy the best will actu
ally save you money in the long run.
