The people are justly becoming im- patient at the slow movement of the city council in beginning the construc- tion of a sewer system for Rossland. Sewerage and fire protection were the extreme emergencies discussed, and the incoming administration was pledged to secure both at the earliest possible time. The heat of the summer will soon be upon us, and if sickness and death comes with it, it will be onty what may be reasonably expected, if the city is not provided with some kind of a sewer- age system. To be sure it is a serious matter to establish a sewerage system for a place which promises to be a great city, and not waste money on work which will aiterwards be valueless. It is too important a step to betaken with- out due consideration. If the board of public works and the city council ap- pear to be a little slow in the inaugura- tion of a system, and beginning work, they can be excused to a considerable extent, for this reason, and for the further rea- son that the defeated element at the recent election is pursuing a systematic course of It-finding for politi pur- i through the workings of an i i ifies this attribute. And this is the point in Mr. Gladstone’s nature which Mr. Bright did not touch upon. If any one can read the life of Mr, Gladstone and not reach the conclusion that he is an in- tensely selfish man, then such a reader has no gift of the sixth sense. We have his exact prototype on this side, except that Mr. Gladstone has a really master- ful intellect and is wonderfully culti- vated, while Grover Cleveland is an BITUATIONS WANTED. Morris Is an Enshusiast in Re- gard to British Columbia. A. W. Morris has just returned from Rossland and the British Columbia mining camps, says the Montreal Ga- zette. Mr. Morris is most enthusiastic. He has thoroughly investigated the var- ious camps and mines in each, and states that no easterner could possibly hesitate for a moment in recommending the western country if he personally vis- ited the properties. Mr. Morris person- ally examined fifty-one mines and pros- pects, and found in the majority of cases honest, conscientious development work had been carried out, and in every in- stance where this has been done ore is found, and with excellent prospects. In the Le Roi mine we went to the bottom of the 500 foot level by ladder, and subsequently dropped down 70 feet by rope. They are now ippi ROOMS FOR RENT. Call on them at E. W. Squatters who iive upon the Zenith ground, decreed to the Paris Belle peo ple by the supreme court oi the province, are receiving notices from the Nelson & Fort Sheppard railway company to con- tinue to pay rent. This is a most scan- dalous proceeding in the face of the fact that the court has decreed against the railroad company, —_—_—_ For a month two empty graves yawned in the Catholic cemetery forthe remains of two unfortunate hu nan beings who were killed in the avalanche, which oc- curred on the Red Mountain railroad should show a profit of $25 per ton. With their new hoisting plant, if nothing occurs, there should be no rea- sonable doubt why they should not be shipping from 400 to 600 tons per day within the next few weeks. In the Centre Star mine the showing is remarkable. Mr. Morris spent two nours anda half under ground, going through the various tunnels, drifts, cross-cuts, etc., and from Mr. Durant’s idea there is no doubt but that this mine will show immense profits, run- ning into the millions. ‘Phe War Eagle is looking particularly well, Samples have been taken show- ing as high as 7 ozs. in gold. Mr. Mor- ris algo visited the Josie, [ron Mask, St. Elmo, Columbia Kootenay, Colonna, Great Western, Iron Cult, Big ‘Three, California, Gopher, Homestake, and any number of others on the Red and O. K. mountains. | Of course it must be realized, be says, that the silver galena properties are in a position, from the grass roots, to produce ore ata reasonable price for develop- ment, when thousands of dollars have to be spent in the same work on the gold within the very door yard of Rossland. Closing Quotations in Spokane Yester- dsy—Sales. He once said of Gladstone: ‘‘He is an honest man; he believes what he says. The worst of it is that he too readily be- lieves what he wishes to believe.” Toa question whether that was not some- thing like self-deceit, Mr. Bright replied : “No, Mr. Gladstone sees an object which he thinks of vital importance, and he turns in all directions for arguments in support of it. He finds them, and he becomes unconscious of anything out- side of them. That is not self-deceit.’’ That description applies to many and many & man; to many an attorney, to many _a judge on the bench; to many @ man in every-day life. Two neighbors quarrel, and we see at once the friends of the respective men taking sides with their friend, and this almost regardless of the merits of the quarrel.
