CostewsPhoto courtesy of Carol Couch Restructuring proposal VANCOUVER (CP) — A restructuring proposal for the financially troubled Tea- chers’ Investment Housing Co-operative will allow de- positors greater access to their funds, says a coop spokesman. When the 45,000-member co-op went into receivership last November and was de- clared technically insolvent, $268 million in unsecured de- posits was frozen when dir- ectors filed a holding prop- osal in B.C. Supreme Court. Under the holding prop- osal, members are allowed to withdraw one-half of one per cent of their total deposits a i month. John Hudson, a co-op vice- president, said members should receive a letter from co-op directors within a few days, with the restructuring proposal to follow in less than a month. Hudson would not disclose details of the proposal, say. ing the report by interim re- ceiver Martin Linsley of Coopers and Lybrand Ltd. antee the co-op’s $65-million shortfall, the difference be- tween the book value and market value of the co-op's assets. This would pave the way for a merger between the co-op and a bank. But Consumer Affairs Minister Elwood Veitch said Wednesday the government will do every- thing short of financial aid to help the co-op. Revenue Canada has told members they must declare interest income from frozen deposits on their 1985 tax returns. “If at a later date, a set- tlement of some sort is reached by the co-op and its members, and they don't be- receive all of that (interest) money, we would look at a tax treatment or refund for everyone involved,” said Sue Bernanose, a Revenue Can- ada spokesman. City signs agreement VANCOUVER (CP) — city of Nelson and the ac government have signed an agreement giving the city control of its former univer. sity campus. A private high school is the probable successor to the de- funect 600-student David Thompson University Cen- tre. “We're so badly off here that no one would refuse a high school, but the whole community really wants a university,” said Dedie Dodds, 66, one of the Nelson residents who took part in a sit-in when the campus was shut by Victoria in 1984. Ald. Sharon Heflin said she's looking forward to the private high school hiring staff from the area, where unemployment hovers around 20 per cent. “But I would have preferred to see it developed into a good uni versity.” Mayor Gerald Rotering FOR FULL DETAILS __ said that 10 Manitoba edu- cators are the front-runners to lease the site. The group wants to create a private high school with enriched programs and tui- tion of $6,000 to $12,000 a year. The school would open in the fall of 1987. + CHUR Past Fireside Motel Pastors: R.H.
