os Casta News inva By CHISHOLM MACDONALD Canadian Press Man the gateposts! Set up sentries in the orchards, lawn trees and woodlots! An army of creepy, crawly, furry things may be heading your way. It's the latest invasion of cater pillars — the forest tent and eastern tent varieties — all craving to nibble and denude juicy trees in their wake. The good news is there will be na permanent desolation or casualties ing catep and the trees will live to bloom another day. But while ‘they're around, those caterpillars are a gosh-darn nuisance. Richard and Jean Kimber of the Edmonton area know the feeling of being under siege. The relentless crawlers cover the trees, gra‘ porch and outside walls of their house. The family scrapes them from the windows by the shovelful and it's a nightmare when they fall into their hair. BLACK AND YELLOW Although they seem to abound in black and yellow, they sport other jaunty colors as well. The forest tents are predominantly black with yellow or white dots down their back while the eastern tents are black and can have a blue or green stripe on llars a nuisance either side of a white line down the back. . The caterpillars burst out in abun- dance in approximately 10-year cycles and stay in an area for about three years, says Joe Churcher, an entomologist with the Ontario Min- istry of Natural Resources. They emerge when regular insect para- sites and predators are in their de- clining cycle. There have been no serious in- festations yet in the Atlantic prov- inces, perhaps because of the sum- mer weather arriving later in that area, Churcher said, British Colum- bia was hit hard five years ago, or at the halfway mark in the cycle. But parts of Alberta, Saskatche- wan, Ontario and Quebec have been crawling with the critters. GROUP TOGETHER “As they move from area to area, they tend to group together in large masses,” Churcher said. “They'll crawl down the road, for example, and if a house or cottage gets in the way, they'll just crawl right over the top of it.” Both varieties of caterpillar hatch their eggs between mid-April and early May. Churcher recommends either of two types of insecticide spray. ~The biological insecticide, BT, con- taining natural bacteria, is sprayed on the foliage and kills the cater- pillars when they eat. It is toxic only to caterpillars. The other is a chemical insecticide called Carbaryl or Sevin. It also is sprayed on the tree and kills the caterpillars either on contact or when they eat the leaves.
