‘Margaret LaFond has been
named Rossland's Citizen of the
Year,

‘And if you have a little trouble
placing who she is, it's probably
because you know her as Bobbie,
a nickname given to her as a little
girliby her: father when he
“bobbed” her hair.

zen, taking over from Maurice

The surprise brought tears to
LaFond’s eyes as Underwood,
chairman of the Citizen of the
Year' committee of the Rossland
Chamber of: Commerce, present-
ed:her with a bouguet of flowers
on the front lawn of her home.

£ Mrs. LaFond was chosen for
her | ‘many years of active partici-

pation in! ‘community ‘service and
broad-based ‘diversity of group
involvement," Underwood said.
“Her leadership, support and
commitment to Rossland has
made her a very deserving recipi-
ent. As well, Mrs, LaFond, with
her husband, Slim, have mised 16
children.”
' Indeed, ‘children have’ always
played a large part in Bobbie
LaFond's life. “The ‘major
accomplishment and highlight of
my life is being mother to 16
children,” said Lafond. “It is
rewarding to see them grow from
tiny babies into happy, healthy
adults, cach one living a good,
clean life and being a good citi-
zen in the’ community they live
in.”

LaFond told The Times that
although she never worked out-

side the home, her contribution '

to the well-being of her family
was just as gratifying. “On our
small acreage, I kept a milk cow,
making butter, cottage cheese
and ice cream. We raised the

calves to be beef on our table.
We also have chickens for meat
and fresh eggs. At times’ we
raised goats, rabbits and geese, I
have a few hives of bees and
keep our families and friends
supplicd with honey.” Her large
garden provided the goods that
LaFond canned and preserved for
the winter.

The 62-year-old woman has
been. active with many organiza-
tions in the ity and,

she has held many positions; the
.C. Heart and Stroke Founda-
tion of which she is a past presi-
dent;the Mater Misericordiac
Hospital Auxiliary of which she
is president and the Rossland

Fall Fair, where she is head of

the honey section. She and her
husband are volunteer drivers for
the Meals on Wheels program.
LaFond’s involvement also
manifests itself in her recreation-
