bookie outlets show British
oddsmakers are-rating Can-
ada’s chances of a World Cup
victory in next year’s soccer
championship in Mexico at

ever foray into soccer's pre-
mier tournament, is expected
to place dead last among the
four teams drawn last Sun-
day to compete in Group C
for preliminary-round play.

Recently'I received in Ottawa some 85 form letters
from residents of

return address so I will take this opportunity to respond.

The letter reads:

Mr. (blank), MP,

“I care about our postal service. The number one
priority of the post office should be to restore and expand
postal service. Deregulation or privatization of the post
office will only further reduce service.

‘The mandate given to the post office when it became
a Crown corporation was to maintain and improve “basic
customer services” above all else. This mandate should
not be changed!

I feel that a halt should be called to all cutbacks in
services and staffing. The latest postal rate increase does
not benefit the average customer with the improved
service one should expect. Big business is the only one
who profits by lower incentive rates, but they too suffer
from delayed or poor service. Also, five day door-to-door
delivery should be implemented for everyone in urban
areas, as well as improved service at rural post offices. I
am now paying more for postal services but receiving
less.

I would request your support to see that our postal
service is restored and expanded.”

This letter has obviously been crafted by a union.
The letter bears the initials “opeiu 225,” which stands for
the Office P 1 Pp) ional Union,
Local 225; the union under which the office support staff
of many major trade unions, including the postal unions,
are certified. I do not know however, who distributed it
locally. i 2

Tcan't say I agree with every statement made in this
letter, but I do agree with its general premise. The fact of
the matter is our postal service is lousy. Hardly a day
goes by when I do not receive mail from constituents
complaining about a particular incident of postal disaster,
or generally demanding better service.

to review the mandate and productivity of the
corporation. The committee held hearings, visited
various postal facilities, and met officials of the U.S. and
Australian postal services. In its report to Parliament
this fall, the review committee made a total of 43 recom-

award and a community ser-
vice award to two Castlegar
residents at the West Koot-
enay Regional meeting Sat-
urday in Castlegar.

Deb. Chmara received a
long-time service award and
Sandman Inn_manager Jim
Young received a community
service award.

Chmara’s award was pre-
sented by Ed Taylor, Red
Cross regional director for
the B.C. Interior.

Chmara has been actively
involved with the Canadian
Red Cross Society since 1964,
both in school and in the
community. For most of that
time she has been official
