COMMUNITY NEWS When the Progressive Conservative government came to power it inherited a serious financial mess, largely the result of unrestrained growth in government spending. growth has been stronger than many European countries, twice as great as in the United States, and equal to that of Japan. This is evidence that we are on the right track. Next year, the deficit will be cut to $29.8 billion, and to $22 billion by 1990-91. The federal debt will no longer come about as a result of spending cuts. However, in making those expenditure reductions, the government is guided by its belief that such cuts must show common sense and sensitivity to the économic needs of the regions. Accordingly, expenditure reduc- tions are part of a balanced program which puts those limited resources in the hands of those who need it the most. The plight of low income earners is of major concern For 15 years, Liberal governments had been more and more spending by borrowing more and more money. As a country we had been mortgaging our future, year by year, and paying the interest by taking out a new loan. By September 1984, the national debt was approaching the $200 billion mark. Today, one of every three dollars the government collects is spent to pay interest on that debt. Recognizing the serious implications of letting this burden continue to get bigger and bigger, the PC government has taken action. As Finance Minister Michael Wilson described it in his Feb. 26 budget speech: “The buck was passed to us. Well, the buck stops here.” In November 1984, we put in place a strategy to reduce the deficit; to slow the rate at which the federal debt is growing. The strategy was carried forward in the budgets of May 1985, and again last month. And it is strategy that is working. Last May, we said we would reduce the deficit from $36 billion last year to $33.8 billion this year, and we have met that target. ‘At the same time, jobs have been created in record numbers, and business confidence is high. i Inflation is low, and remains stable. Economic to this g . We have e Sh sales tax credit for those families and individuals with incomes below $15,000. And, for those same families, we are introducing a new system of advance payments of the child tax eredit, to provide more timely assistance, and to reduce the need for tax discounting. The federal government has worked together with the provinces to establish a special program to help welfare recipients find work. As well, support for older workers who have lost their jobs through plant closures or layoffs, will be strengthened. These initiatives reflect the government's philos- ophy that while restoring fiscal responsibility must be our fundamental goal, it is equally essential to make investments now which will ensure future growth and Michael Wilson's February budget asks that we all make a contribution to restoring the health of the nation's finances. He started at the top by asking the prime minister, and the cabinet. He has asked MPs and senators. And, he has asked you. We must solve the problems of the past in order to achieve our goal of high growth, lower interest rates, and more jobs. I sense that the mood of Canadians is positive, and receptive to this budget. Give them a summer job. Every summer, students provide a wealth of talent, knowledge and ingenuity that em. ployer can tap. As an employer, you will it from the energy and enthusiasm students bring to their summer jobs. The students in tur will gain the experience so valuable to entering the working world. Of course students are willing to do just about any sort of work available, but ideally, they would like to find employment related to their field of study. This would help ease the transition from school to work, and help eliminate the “no experience/no job” bias that they may face when seeking full time employment. Hiring students makes good business sense. We decided to go swimming so we went back to our hotel to get our stuff and headed off for Kits Beach. When my Day got out of the changeroom, what a sight to see! He was wearing a Hawaiian bathing suit that. was skin tight. He looked just like a Sumo wrestler. I could tell that people were giving him strange looks. DUSTIN I LIKE MY PET CAT I enjoy my furry pet. I got him when he was six weeks old. He was very small and so soft to touch and very playful. Now that he is all grown up, he is not as playful as when he was little. He likes to spend his time sleeping curled up like a fur ball on his bright gray colors. Sometimes he sits by the window staring at the outside. For every sound he hears, he wags his tail as if he is a dog. Actually he is my cat, Jasper. P LOST IN THE WOODS He scampered through the woods. He had been lost for days without food or drink. He was getting so weak walking was a struggle. Then all of a sudden he saw a light. He started toward it then he could hear screams and yells. Soon he realized he was walking into a death p- What first caught his eye was the chief tearing into a young man's flesh. Right away he realized these villagers were cannibals. At this point he was as hungry as a shark and as thirsty as a camel. He made a decision to go try make friends with the cannibals. He leaped out from the bushes and made himself visible. At first they stared in astonishment, then they all began to laugh. They all started toward him to pat him on the back, except the chief who was still laughing. ‘The next few days were filled with glory, all he did was lie in bed and drink wine with grapes. The next morning he awoke to find himself tied up tightly with rope. Then two cannibals walked in, picked him up and took him toward a roaring fire. He realized this was the end of the line. JOHNNY STRILAEFF Grade 6 Twin Rivers Elementary MY PET I would like to tell you about my pet. My pet is a cat whose name is Pushkin. He was a kitten when we got him and now he is almost a full grown cat. Pushkin is about one in a half years old. He is orangy brown. Pushkin has a small head and a small nose. He also has small paws. Pushkin got neutered a few months ago. He got his stitches out on Wednesday Nov. 27, 1985. Now that Pushkin is neutered we let him in the house almost all the time. He sometimes wanders off when he's in the house and goes upstairs. Before Pushkin was neutered he went upstairs in my mom's room and went to the bathroom on her bed CHERYL ZIBIN Grade 4 Twin Rivers Elementary FOR SALE One lonely elephant. Useful for a princess. SKIING Winter is here and the fun begins Snow is falling so shiny so white Just perfect for a mighty snowball fight The skis in the garage Are waiting just for me To get on my snowsuit and shout wowee I look at that hill And wishfully hope That I will not fall On that very steep slope Oh, how I love that snappy winter snow BRADLEY FIRE! The roaring blaze streaked through the venerable forest. Animals scampering in every direction trying to find a safe place to hide. Bulldozers, waterbombers, and firefighters fought the invincible flame, struggling to save their beloved forest. I came up from our barn only about a mile away, to see what the row was about. It was fire! I took off down the road to tell my parents. I slipped and fell in the muddy gravel. My face and hands were bleeding and I could feel stones and dirt ground in. I got up slowly, and brushed the loose dirt off. Then started walking home again. I told my parents, and they started running around the house collecting valuables, at times I couldn't even hear what they were saying. The fire was getting closer, and closer and closer. My little sister kept saying, “When are the firetrucks gonna come?” I slowly went up the road again to see the fire. The blaze was gorging itselt with the animals that weren't fast enough to escape. I ran back down, being careful not to slip. My parents and sister were waiting in the car. I got in and my dad floored it, I almost got whiplash. When we were half way down the road my dad stopped. The fire had surrotinded us from every corner. A rescue helicopter came in to help us, but there were too many trees for it to come in. We were trapped. Then they dropped a rope ladder and my sister went up first, then me, next my mom and finally, dad. The next morning I woke up to the sound of a radio. The announcer said that the fire had been put out by a firecrew from a nearby city. We went back to our house and the fire hadn't touched it, but it still would have been too close for comfort. GAVIN MEALING Grade 6 Twin Rivers Elementary THE COMFRUITY The very rare comfruity grown on a five metre high tree on Zinuzy Island, near Australia. When the January breezes blow, the flowers wave in the air and give off a tingly mint smell. Six months later, in the cooler month of June, the comfruity is ready to be enjoyed. Something unique about this fruit is that if it is picked before it is ripe it will burst open or explode. Picking the comfruity is very pleasant because the edible leaves smell like mint. The chocolate stems taste good too. The six inch long fruit has special tiny chocolate seeds in side that give you a burst of energy Its outside skin is soft and fuzzy and the inside tastes like strawberries. The comfruity looks like a long oversized Kiwi fruit. Please come und visit my comfruity farm on Zinuzy Isiand next June when this wonderful fruit ripens. MY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE My family and I had a fun time this summer. This summer I went to the PNE. I went to see if I could go on the rollercoaster, but I had to measure myself. I almost couldn't go but I did so I went. You would go in these carts and start moving slowly. Then you would go up @ hill and around a bend. You would go faster and faster until you would get seared. You would go up some hills and down some hills then you would stop. Some teenagers got into trouble and aren't aloud to go on the rollercoaster anymore. I went on some other rides and had fun. Have you ever been on a rollercoaster? It looks fun but it isn't. That day was fun but scary. IRENE GUGLIELMI Grade 4 ‘Twin Rivers Elementary School is important to me because we get art and I like mrs. king. She is nice and I like Reading and everything in School. LANA PALSSON ALL ABOUT THE FISH I HAD The fish I had and have are quite interesting. First about a year.ago I got two fish from my cousin. One lived until summer and the other until fall. The one that lived until fall got quite old. For three days it was acting quite weird. The third day of it acting weird we just took it out of the water and right away it was dead. Poor fish! But that same day we got two more fish. Isn't that great? Later about a week or so the smallest fish died. Now I have one frisky fish left. Isn't that kind of odd? I think so.
