f PLL DDL LY 82\. Castlegar News March 13, 1991 SPORTS SCHOOL SPORTS By CasNews Staff GIRLS BASKETBALL It’s called Basketsmall, but it’s a big deal to 24 Grade 7 girls at Kin- naird Junior secondary school and their coach Cheryl Closkey. And, in fact, it is a pretty big deal, with 30 boys teams and 30 girls teams from across the province com- peting in what is as close as it gets to a provincial championship in Grade 7 basketball. Closkey and hér girls, who are defending champions at the Basket- small Jaboree, leave Friday for the University of B.C. in Vancouver for the third annual event. This year, Closkey is taking two girls teams who will compete in a competitive A division and a recreational B division as the only Kootenay representatives at the Jam- boree. Closkey isn’t predicting anything at this point, but she does say that KJ once again has the talent to do well. “Comparing this year’s team to last year’s team I'd say it’s just as good. And we were one of the top two teams in the province last year,’’ she said. Closkey said the talent includes five-foot-10-inch guard Tami Zoobkoff, who will be a force under the basket on KJ's A team, Shawna Harshenin doesn’t have the height but she’s got plenty of speed on the A team and Tamara Terry is the club’s sharpshooter, said Closkey. On the B team, Closkey said Carrie Markin, Brooke Coleman and Danielle Gagnon are all solid per- formers. Both teams are guaranteed five games on Saturday and three more Sunday. The girls warmed up for the Jam- boree with a Grade 8/Grade 7 tour- nament at SHSS last weekend. Beaver Valley Grade 8s won the tournament but Closkey’s A team did defeat a Grade 8 team from Grand Forks. BOYS BASKETBALL They're going to have to make room in the KJSS trophy case for a shiny new basketball with the names of all the players on the school’s Grade 8 boys basketball team written on it. The basketball is the prize the boys team got for placing second overall in the West Kootenay Grade 8 boys basketball championships in Trail last weekend. David Pereversoff scored 12 points Friday as KJ was edged 33-29 by Beaver Valley in the final. Coach John Duncan said he knew his boys had the talent to make it to the final in the eight-team tourney, but upsetting a strong Beaver Valley squad was too much to ask, “Beaver Valley has beaten us all season, so to come within four poin- ts, that was the best game we've bared all season,"’ said Duncan. KJ’s Grant Mosby was pa MVP in the team’s win over J,L. Crowe in the preliminary round while Andrew Peterson was MVP in the win over Trafalgar Junior secon- dary of Nelson, Pereversoff won the MVP in the final, Grand Forks had two teams in the championship while Rossland and Salmo were also represented. GIRLS SOCCER Just a year after girls soccer made its debut in Stanley Humphries secondary school’s athletic program, enough girls are interested in playing this year that there could be two teams. “We had over 40 girls show up at No, it's not a stickup, it's just basketball coach Chery! Closk showing one of her G: 7 girls how to play defence. Closkey and 24 Kinnaird Junior secondary girls were practising at the school Monday night in preparation for their trip to UBC and the Basket small Jamboree this weekend. CosNews photo by Ed Mills Enter to WIN Your Very Own QR EASTER BUNNY! twice as as we had ‘hast year, I'm very excited, It's great to see so much enthusiasm."’ On the down ‘side, Lust said it would be a shame if more than half of the 40 girls who wanted to play had to be cut because there was no room for them on one team. So she'll be asking other West Kootenay schools if they want to start a junior and senior program. It was just senior girls last year. “*If the other schools have as many. nn girls coming out they may be able to have two teams as well,”’ she said. Until the weather warms up, Lust will be running an indoor soccer league so girls can work on their skills and get in shape for the season. She’s hoping to start the outdoor practices early next month.
