Right before your eyes the pink stripes turn to white. Just like that The color changed with the warm temperature on the bus. It will turn back to bright pink as soon as she steps outside again. How does it work? “‘It’s magic,” styles inspired by people who play turned lavender, and the white stripes Silk boxer shorts take off in popularity VICTORIA (CP) — More men are getting into silk boxer shorts. Bonnie Taylor, who owns Victoria’s-Silks For Men, says in contrast to their relative indifference towards undergarments 20 years ago, men now con- sider looking good in their underwear a priority. “When I first opened three years ago, most of my clients were women who came to buy for their husban- ds or boyfriends,"’ she said. “Now well over 70 per cent of my customers are men. They are getting away from their boring old cot- ton briefs and treating themselves to nicer things.”” There are finely made briefs and boxers in materials such as shiny- or matte-finish silk. French cottons complete with tatting details and linen light as muslin. And they come in every color of the rainbow. Victoria resident Mike Gorman switched to silk boxers three years ago and swears he'll never go back. “They're much more comfortable than briefs because they don’t cut off your circulation when you work out,” he said. ‘*And you can wear them as shorts as well — that’s how I got into them. “I wanted something different for running on the beach. Once I started wearing them under pants as well I was hooked.”” But it’s a sensation that takes some getting used to, Gorman warns. “*You feel kind of exposed in silk, like you’re not wearing any underwear at all. You can feel every movement and that makes you feel kind of naked. But I like that — it’s sensual.”” Gorman says silk ‘‘wicks’’ — that is, it draws moisture away from the skin so even during a workout the wearer feels comfortable. That’s also why silk has become a popular material for long-johns used by skiers and kayakers. “The one complaint I’ve heard about silk boxers is they ride up. The answer is to get them a bit big — then they don’t bind when you sit down.”” Taylor said her gustomers wear their silk boxers to lounge around the house on Sunday mornings, as well as under their best suits. “*Lots of men wouldn’t have been caught dead in boxers a few years ago. They thought it was silly. But once they try it, they love it.’” Eighty per cent of her business is in boxers. She sells close to 500 pairs a month, ranging from $40 to 345. Briefs are $20 to $30 in silk. And what of men who want to wear silk boxers but aren’t ready to relinquish their security? Taylor says they buy bikini briefs to wear underneath. illustration shunned KITCHENER, Ont. They’re now a stock item and we're selling at least two or three dozen a month.”” Lamb’s biggest business is with European tourists, embassy staff in Vancouver and Italians. “Italian men especially recognize the value and comfort of linen. It is cool to wear because it absorbs perspiration and is very comfortable next to the skin."’ ° Woinen also buy linen boxers to use as night shor- ts, Lamb said. “They are not at all itchy. They are cool and soft and you can machine wash them and they hang dry.”” Lamb sells white boxers in fine cambric weight for $39.95 and a heavier Prince of Wales check for $49.95. While much of the world’s best linen is grown in Normandy in France, it is spun in Ireland, says Lamb. fashion black cover last year waive first in almost a 7 Yet proponents of fashion illustration aren't ready to call the art dead and buried. They ‘say another comback is inevitable. Just as wild) Pucci prints and groovy Barbarella headbands of the 1960s look right again after many ears of serious black suits, “I'm very about it. It has a@ strong chance of coming back,"’ says Sunny Choi, a Toronto fashion illustrator who turned to fashion design two years ago. Choi points out a common misun- derstanding about the drawings: “Fashion illustration has almost nothing to do with fashion design. It’s an art.” Bridal fashions here Now that you're engaged, a visit to Magic Moments Bridal Centre located in Rose’s Boutique is a must. The line of volley-surf clothing — beach volleyball — was introduced in Edmonton recently by W.R. In- ternational Distributors, a local com- pany which will import the clothes in- to Canada. There are no specifics on price, although the caps would sell for about $25. A cool Edmonton afternoon served as the perfect marketing tool for Moreno, whose yellow cap im- mediately turned red when she step- ped outside. A robin’s-egg blue visor on her jacket turned pink. Moreno says the idea came from her friend and company president Darrell Pierro. inspired by the chameleons he raises in Calfornia and aided by some chemist friends. The process is a secret, said Moreno. As she fidgeted with the collar of her track suit, parts of the pale pink stripes turned white with her touch. ““We're kept pretty .much in the dark.” Winter boots keep you warm The snow will soon be flying:and you’re going to need something to keep your feet warm and dry.
