Volunteers from the Scouts and Guides picked up the big truck from Regional District of Central Kootenay Recycles in Nelson and parked it in the Safeway lot from 9 a.m. until late afternoon. The volunteers, including representatives from the Re- cycle Advisory Group, were on hand throughout the day to ac- cept papers from the public and to provide advice and as- sistance on how to sort and stack them. There were a few occasions throughout the day when the wind and the rain made it a re- al challenge persevered. A few local dignitaries, in- cluding Ed Conroy and Doreen Smecher, even showed up. At the end of the day 6358 pounds had been collected. Not bad for the first such event in Castlegar. A similar event is planned for May 2, which is the first Saturday in May. . This time volunteers from the United Church will spon- sor the event. It will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the, same location. Yet another collection day is Gey . Recycling and You scheduled for the first Satur- day in June, and will be spon- sored by volunteers from USCC. If any other volunteer groups would like to offer their services for later dates, please contact me. At this time, the success of these events depends strictly on participation from volun- teers. Newspapers should be sep- arated from colored flyers, and stacked into cardboard boxes or put into brown paper bags or tied into bundles. Glossy paper and maga- zines will be accepted but must be separated from the non-glossy material. Remember, every ton of pa- per which is recycled saves 17 trees. Brian L. Brown.
