The new rate, now approaching the 20-year low of 9.75 per cent achieved earlier this year, was set amid continuing signs of sluggish economic growth. BLUE BOX BLUES Jewelry retailer Henry Birks and Sons Ltd. announced ~ Wednesday it will lay off 100 of its 300 head office personnel in j Montreal during the coming year as a result of computerizing operations. The company has 2,400 employees and 150 stores in Canada. GETTING THERE Air Canada and Greyhound Lines are joining forces to promote air travel among residents of smaller communities by bringing the runway and the road closer together. Customers who purchase Air Canada tickets worth at least $259 for travel between June 3 and Sept. 7 will receive a free bus pass that will allow customers to travel from the | Greyhound terminal in their WorkPLACE. Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER : Although largely known locally as a B.C company, Pope and Talbot Ltd. is more than that, a lot more. The American-based company calls Portland, Ore. its home base, and has three separate divisions located in 10 states, as well as here in B.C. With the acquisition of the local sawmill this year, P & T now owns six sawmills in western North America. Expectations are high for the company’s latest acquisition, as it is hoped the new mill will help the company come close to doubling its Canadian capacity and, at the same time, add 40 per cent to the company’s total lumber capacity. Yearly totals show 496 million board feet of lumber produced in 1991, a number that is hoped will reach 789 million in 1992. Before Castlegar, approximately 75 per cent of the company’s lumber production came from its mills in Grand Forks and Midway; as well as from Port Gamble, Wash., on the Olympic Peninsula. The lumber from those mills went primarily into the production of new houses in the U.S., where the market surged in late 1991 because of low interest and Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER I don’t know an awful lot about-cars. I don’t like to admit it because it has something to do. with the fact that men are supposed to know all about what they drive. But with me, that’s different. When the opportunity to test drive cars in our fair city arose, I hesitated at jumping into something. I was about as familiar with as nuclear fusion. The remaining 25 per cent.of the company’s lumber came from its two mills located in Spearfish, SD and Newscastle, WY. The lumber from those mills went primarily_into the-remodeling market, one historically less volatile than the housing market. Staying in the western U.S., the company’s lone pulp and paper mill sits in Halsey, Ore., south of Portland, primarily producing White Gold Pulp and slush pulp. Like the company’s sawmills, expectations for 1992 are greater than last year, when the mill produced 181,000 tons of pulp, a number that is hoped will increase to 200,000 this year. and Talbot The third division of P & T is the consumer products division, which can be broken down into diapers and tissue. Through the company’s five production plants in five states, 794 million diapers were put out in 1991, or just over three for every resident of the U.S. As staggering as that may seem, the company is hoping to increase that total by over 50 per cent this year, aiming for some 1.2 billion diapers. The tissue sector — napkins, facial and bath tissue and paper towels — is shared by two plants in Wisconsin and one in Pennsylvania, where output reached 137,000 tons last year, and will drop to 131,000 this year because of cutbacks in production. Although the company reported an 11 per cent drop in revenues and a loss of $11.6 million for 1991, company chairman Peter Pope stated all eyes are on the future. “Despite experiencing a difficult year, Pope and Talbot remains in strong financial condition, with a long-term debt to total capitalization ratio that is one of the lowest in the industry. “With confidence in our future and our balanced business startegy, in 1991 the board of directors raised dividends by six per cent, the fifth consecutive year of increases.” When in motion, the Automatic Door Lock feature kicks in, keeping travellers in and intruders out. And to put the car in motion on the automatic models, the brake has to be fully applied before shifting out of park. Both the GT and SE come with four or six cylinders, available with single or dual overhead cams, and can be equipped with 3-speed automatic or 5-speed manual’ transmissions. The 2.3L automatic (because and Castlegar Mazda, those fears have been quickly quelled. My first day as an auto expert began at Kalawsky behind the wheel of a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am SE. Before handing me the keys, the sales team of Brian, Ike, and the two Bruces told me everything I would need to know about my toy for the day. A car of the early 70s, the Grand Am went out of production for a few years before being reintroduced in 1985, light years different than its predecessor. And though only seven years have passed between then and now, the 1992 Grand Am is as | different from the 1985 model as it is from the 1969 model. Brian said General Motors’ thinking was to make the ‘Grand Am stand out from other company models. “They're trying to give the car some personality,” he said, “to distinguish it from the other lines at GM, and I think they’ve done a good job.” To distinguish the Grand Am, GM started, basically, from the ground up, making the car 10 inches longer than last year. At the same time, they focused on a more aerodynamic vehicle, reducing the drag coefficient from .37 to .34, and installing features like flush mounted headlights. In as much as the exterior is more aerodynamic, GM has made giant steps in making the Grand Am a safer car for both the driver and passenger. Perhaps the biggest safety step up from the 1991 model is the introduction of anti-lock brakes, a standard on all four models. At the encouragement of Brian, I took the car up the highways towards_ both Christina Lake and Salmo.and brought it. back down with one goal in mind: hit a high speed and lock the brakes... Easier said than done. - The ABS system lived up to its name, as even braking at speeds in excess of 100 km/h failed to sway . Staying with safety, the interior of the Grand Am is loaded, and its not just geared toward the front seat occupants. Designed to spread impact force rather than centralize it, the steering wheel deforms to the angle of the driver’s torso in the event of a collision. I’m weenie enough to not know how to drive a stick}, dual OHC in the model I took out was peppy and’ responsive. A drawback, though, was the amount of engine noise when a sudden burst of speed was required. As well, when climbing the hill out to Blueberry Paulson, the gas pedal had to be right down for the tar to get going. When the car did get going, it handled quite nicely, offering a smooth ride and good cornering. After all was said and done, I was very impressed with the Grand Am, a car I came very close to buying two years ago. Put two doors on it, and it’s a sports car. Add two more, and its just as easily a family car.
