SPORTS December 27,:1990 By FRANK DERBY Sun stoff writer Seniors have 2 definite advan- tage in that they're not committed to the nine to five routine and demands of the work-a-day world. For many swimming laps is a large part of their social and recreational schedule, For a select few, swim- ming Iaps at the Castlegar Aquatic Center is both an addiction and the Fountain ‘of Youth. In what appears to be a unique gram in the West Kootenay, the Castlegar Aquatic Center operates the “Kilometer Klub"rewarding participants with free passes for completing 15 km, - one for the younger crowd, two for those over 55, and three for those over 65. : Seniors leading Kilometer Klub Nelson will have what amounts to a competition in the new year with what they call “Swim Across Canada”. Trophies and prizes will ° be given out to those who finish with the top accumulated distances over a three month period. Trail doesn’t have an indoor pool. ‘ Anyone is welcome to join the Castlegar Km. Klub including those from Nelson and Trail and all points in between. There are currently 130 participants in the , program which was started by the Aquatic Center back in March, The process is quite simple - you swim lengths, let the lifeguard know how many you did, and your tally is recorded in the Klub book. Swimming I've been doing, I think | book", one has to be impressed with those who are entitled to two or three passes for each 15 km., particularly with the trio of Paul Oglow and Joe and Della Kubos. Della has been involved since day one and bas racked up a remark- able 201 km.. Her husband Joe has clocked 109 km., while Paul Oglow has a more than respectable 116. Bom in Alberta, Paul has been a Kootenay resident almost all his life. Since leaving the farm in Glade at the ‘age of 17 he has worked in a dry cleaners in Trail, served’ in the diner for CPR between Vancouver and Medicine Hat and did a stint on tugboats up an down the coast. From there he retumed to Trail where he was a letter carrier for five years before going into business with his broth- ers here in Castlegar. For over 25 years Oglow Building and Supply was an institution in this town. Paul is currently the city’s coro- ner, a position he has held for the past 11 years and just retired last year as Justice of the Peace. His involvement in curling as well as the Km. Klub is indicative of a man who has no intention of slow- ing down just because he is over 65. Joe, who will be 66 in January and Della who is 62, both retired a little over six years ago. Della taught in Castlegar for 20 years while Joe worked for the School District in Trail. They both swim daily from Monday to Friday for about an hour to an hour-and-a - half. Della also volunteers with the Red Cross and is working on her bowling while Joe keeps him- self busy with woodcraft. “It's automatic for us now,” said Della. “Life revolves around swimming. The Km. Klub pro- vides me with the opportunity to compete with myself and I can measure my progress.” Besides being fun and giving them ‘something to do, they all the’ health’ benefi derived from the regular workout to be an important factor. “I have arthritis in my shoul- der,” said Joe, “and with all the I just might have it licked.” Paul added, “Swimming is A-1 for health - it really helps my lungs.” ‘When you see what these folks . are doing, and what others are doing in the Senior Swim Team, you've got to believe they just might have found the fountain of youth at the Aquatic Center.
