- I='-EPP-]ALK ~ To start this week's column I would like to give you a run-down on some information I got from Jim Markle regarding his trip to the KIJHL annual meeting in Spokane last weekend. All the West Division teams in the league were represented at the meetings but Creston Clippers of the East Division failed to have a rep there. Apparently, the league is going to go along with the 7-5 split in the two divisions which was started last year at the request of the Spokane club. Jim tells -me the Flames reported a $3,000 saving in expenses by playing in the West Division, so it's only natural for them to wish to stay there. A request to change the playoff set-up which a lot of people saw as a little unfair last season, was denied. To refresh your memory, only one team was dropped from each division last season when playoffs rolled around. Terry Skarbo will remain as president of the league. His second term will see him assisted by Wayne Edwards as VP West while Gary Hansen, former Cranbrook Colt manager, will act in that capacity for the East Division. It was brought out at the meeting the Colts now have a record in the competition for the Cyclone Taylor trophy, which they have won four times. From hockey to some summer sports, the Legion West Kootenay zone annual. golf tournament will be held June 2 this year and the site will be the Salmo Golf-port. The Salmo branch of the Legion is the host. It will feature a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and is open to all members. Alex Turner of the Salmo Branch says this means all members, regular, men and women, associates and clubs, can compete. The only stipulation is the ladies can only win the residual prizes. The two trophies, one for the net event, donated by the Labatt Brewing Company and the John Dellow trophy, named for a former member of Branch No. 14, which goes to the gross winner, are reserved for men only. A $15 entry fee will get you 18 holes of golf, a chance at prizes for hidden holes, closest to the pin on certain holes, age group specials, longest drive and a banquet to top off the day. Alex says they are hoping for a good showing from all over the zone. Some of us were thinking of giving the Salmo layout a look-see some time before June 2. I, for one, have never played the course before and I'm not alone. f: - . 1¥itll Harry Pepper Ran into Babe LaFace and John Cozzetto recently and they are looking forward to their summer participation in an oldtimers slow-pitch team which will play Monday evenings at the Cook Avenue Park. They have a summer trip planned for Vernon for an oldster's tourney which they played in last year. While they didn't win any games up there, they were declared the oldest team in the tourney. John should be getting in shape for it as he and "Pie" LaFace have·been walking around three miles a day for some time now. He was saying last night they are running part of their course now. Other members of last year's team were Steve Chorney, Jim Driscoll, Ivan Bell, Bobby Profili, Eddie Ruelle, Al Lavorato, "Butch" Turner, Clare Anderson, Ray Picco, Gerry Godfrey and Cliff "Tongo" Taylor. Also in the realm of oldtimers, Dave Lawrence . j tells me they now have a soccer team m a local league to fill the void left by the departure of the Labatts team. Known as the Rossland Retreads and managed by Dave, the team beat Castlegar out at Castlegar 4-2 in their first game of the new season. A number of former Labatts are turning out. They have games against Fruitvale out in tie Valley on May 16 and a visit from the Nelson team onMay23. ~ Teams in the leaga.e include two from Trail, th Alpines and Laueners, mie from each of Castlegar, Nelson, Grand Forks, Fruitvale, plus the Retreads. Emphasis is qn the fun aspect of the gallle and it is hoped that course will be followed. If so, lt will be a lot of fun to watch. Ooops, I almost forP,t. It's time for retiree golf ¥P at the old Upper Course. So, don't be late, be there pt 8 (a.m.) Tuesday. Okaf? Good! 'Till next week. then! : '
