McGeer agreed all the affairs of colleges affected stu- dents and faculty, but said his ministry's concept of the board is “to represent in a dispassion- ate way the objectives of the college itself, and to avoid representation of “any special interest.” Contacted yesterday, col- lege council chairman Bob Buckley said proclamation of the sections granting corporate status—passed with the other sections of the Act by the legis- lature in September 1977—has produced “a condition colleges have long felt was required.” Buckley said the legislation gives a college board “the same duties and powers as a board of school trustees or a city council, and the same flexibility.” “It ought to enable im- proved management of the: operation,” he said, Asked how soon thecollege will make the transition to corporate autonomy, the chair- man said council members will probably discuss the ‘require- ments of the change and discuss recommendations to the minis- . try at its next meeting. One of the aspects of the transition which will require a Ted’s Home Fully furnished, in- cludes dishwasher. Bright & cheery with Colental Pres Reg. $28,900... 940 S., Highway #3 Hi, neighbors! Jim Switzer, manager of Trail Canada Employment Centre, says the JET incentive ‘hire unemployed youth ‘ebmes in a $1.50-per-hour wage subsidy for a period of up to 26 weeks, Switzer said the JET pro- ‘gram was operated on a moder- ‘ate scale last year, with con- csidered success. “Regionally, we had a target of encouraging Semployers to hire some 1,800 ung people between 15 and Community TV_ ee IMMUNITY ACCESS CH-10 Schedule for Tonight 30—Five-day weather re- rt, po Tomorrow is Now—The firat of a six-part series on planning for retire- ment. 10—USCC 31st’ Annual Youth Festival- Part 7. 10—Nuclear Energy Forum held in Castlegar, Aug. 30 - Second half, 40—Full Gospel Business- men's banquet held in Nelson. 0:30-—A look at Wedgewood Manor on Koot theese 24, but the program helped get jobs for over 2,800. This year we hope to encourage many more jobs for longer periods of time. Depending on the re- sponse from employers, even more money could be made available.” When asked why the pro- gram was restricted to young people, Switzer said -it's a special measure focused to a special problem. “When you look at unemployment levels which are generally in the seven to eight per cent range, you know that job creation pro- jects and special incentives to industry are necessary. But when you look at the youth unemployment rate, which is at least 18 per cent—and likely higher—extra efforts are need- ed.” He added that while the wage incentive is aimed at the employer, the program itself keeps the needs of unemployed youth uppermost in mind. Switzer also said that the Canada Employment Centre isn't necessarily the only ‘con- tact point for the JET program. Chambers of Commerce, com- munity societies and agencies and industry organizations are also encouraged to get in JET as sponsor groups. The employ- ment commission wil! provide administrative costs of $60 per placement for these sponsor groups, Switzer said that Bill Her- manson of the Trail Canada Employment Centre has been Lake. 210—Sign-off. eobeyes to help employers and trainees JET together this winter. + processes your banking fectronically in @ matter of This new concept Is being Intro- duced for the first time'in Castlegar by Castlegar Savings Credit Union. Snow White Was Victim Of Child Abuse Child abuse dates back to antiquity and examples of it can be found in nursery rhymes and fairy tales, says Dr. Robert ten Bensel, a pediatrician and pub- Ue health professor at the Univ. of Minnesota, For example, he said, Cin- derella was probably an abused child. Snow White's step-moth- er ordered the girl murdered.
