A major reason why nothing exists at the present time is be- cause we are waiting for the re- sults of the report being pre- pared by the consultants who have been hired by the Region- al District of Central Kootenay. When a plan is eventually fi- nalized, it will likely include some sort of a material recov- ery depot. The following information provides some thoughts about features which should be con- sidered for an effective depot. It should allow for conve- nient off-loading of collection vehicles and at the same time accommodate accepting mate- rials from public drop-offs. The depot should be de- signed to allow effective sort- ing of incoming materials. Since sorting of materials is such a significant part of any recycling scheme, it is impor- tant to allow maximum flexi- bility of sorting equipment lay- out. Such equipment may in- clude air classifiers and mag- netic separators, and should allow provisions for easy | fs Recycling and You changes to accommodate fu- ture innovations. After sorting, materials must be densified. This typically includes balers for newsprint, card- board and plastics and densi- fiers to shape aluminum and steel cans into cubes. It also includes crushers for Once the materials have been densified, adequate stor- age space is needed so that they can be kept in aclean and dry location until enough vol- ume exists for shipment. Since market are somewhat cyclical, it is desirable to have enough storage space to allow flexibility of sales so its possi- ble to take advantage of the best economic opportunities.
