In London, a British For. eign Office spokesman said SAN SALVADOR (AP) — In a campaign to disrupt Sunday's national elections, leftist rebels blew up four more municipal buildings and telecommunications offices in rural towns, military officials say. The leftists are boycotting the vote, which they call a farce, because they say any leftist candidates would be slain by right-wing death squads. They demand negoti- ations to end the 5'-year civil war before any voting. In the last five weeks, guerrillas have burned 17 municipal buildings and 11 tel icati offices, Nash “was released about midnight last (Tuesday) night.” “He is safe and well,” the spokesman added British Ambassador David Miers confirmed Nash's re lease, but said he could pro- vide no details. Bombings mar elections The civil defence com mander in an Matias said he and four other guardsmen on duty fled Tuesday when reb- els attacked the military post. He told reporters the rebels took five rifles and then dynamited city hall, the municipal, court and tele communications buildings. The rebels target telecom- munications offices because they are the only places where telephone calls can be placed and received. As well, voting results are sent to the council headquarters in the capital by the offices. The recent rebel attacks have destroyed civil records, mainly in northeastern El Salvador. Early Tuesday, they at- tacked San Matias, 33 kilom- etres northwest of San Sal. vador, and dynamited the city hall and three other key buildings, officials said. No casualties were reported. Similar raids were report: ed Monday at Tejutla, 64 kilometres north of the capi. tal, and at El Sauce and Con- cepcion de Oriente, about 76 kilometres east of San Sal. vador. ‘The guerrillas said the raid Tuesday was “a protest against the new electoral farce,” said a San Matias commander, who asked not to be identified for security reasons. He said army rein- forcements arrived hours after the attack. eight luding voter lists. But the Central Electoral Council said it has microfilm records of those lists and that elec. tions should not be affected by the sabotage. Voters will cast ballots for the 60-member National As- sembly and 262 mayors. The last assembly elections were in 1982, as El Salvador began the process of re. storing democracy. The as- sembly then drafted a new constitution that provided for last year's presidential elec tion. President Jose Napoleon Duarte’s centrist Christian Democrats hold 24 assembly seats, but a coalition of righ. tist parties led by the mili tant Republican Nationalist Alliance has 34 seats with the remaining two held by a small swing party. The U.S. delegation, head ed by Ambassador John Tower, and the Soviet team, led by Victor Karpov, met at the offices of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Their meeting, as part of a three-part program of arms talks in Geneva, effectively revived the Stragegic Arms Reduction Talks that were suspended in December 1983 in a Soviet protest against NATO's deployment of medium-range missiles. He returned to Geneva on Monday, two hours before the opening of the first de. tailed discussions on space and defence weapons. The arms talks are divided into three sets — one for medium-range weapons, one for long-range, and one for space weapons. Negotiators specializing in medium-range rockets were scheduled to get down to dis- cussions Thursday. Kampelman is the U.S. team's leader as well as chief negotiator for the space arms set of talks. Both sides have refused to tell reporters what spec- ifically was discussed in these first sessions. The Soviet Union has kept up an attack on U.S. research into the space-based defence system. “The United States is trying to escape retaliation by hiding behind an anti- missile shield that would allow it to deliver a first nuclear strike,” Soviet dele- gate Victor Issraelyan told the 40-country Geneva dis- armament conference, which is unrelated to the super- power talks. Issraelyan outlined six proposals to “avert an arms race in outer space.” They iricluded prohibitions on test- ing and deployment of wea- pons based in space or on Earth and aimed at targets in SPace or on Earth, as well as “new antisatellite systems.” Sesion... $2.19 ‘ Multi-Pack Bars i FY Ganong 100 Gram Hey Kids!
