tle B tlegar N August 7, 1985 BUSINESS MAC'S HEAD SAYS KEY 1S CONVENIENCE By KEN SMITH “TORONTO (CP) — “Sorry,” said a chuckling Eric Findlay as his phone rang in the middle of an interview. “But it’s my birthday and that'll be my mother, I'd ‘better answer or else.” Sure enough, she was calling from Lethbridge, Alta., to see how her 59-year-old son was doing. And, he admitted a bit sheepishly after hanging up, she also wanted to know why he hadn't called her as regularly as usual. in recent weeks. “I've been-busy,” he offered in defence. But his mother can rest assured her son is doing very well, indeed. He's chairman of ‘Sileorp Ltd. — not exactly a “In a way, we miss it, because it was so neat. But it hasn't described our operations for years.” The key word, Findlay says, is convenience. So, many'stores are open 24 hours a day and offer a range of goods, from basic foods to beauty products and © snacks heated in seconds in a microwave oven — as well as milk. TAKE CREDIT CARDS Soon, Findlay predicts, many wilhalso be tied in with self-serve gasoline outlets and will have automatic teller machines from chartered banks or trust companies so customers will have access to these services at any Hour. If his plans develop, stores will also be‘able to accept credit cards. One competing convenience store chain — 7-11 '— recently announced plans to accept cards in Ontario. “There's. no law..against using credit cards_ in markets, though governments have generally frowned on the idea in case people got carried away on impulse buying. he stores went along with the governments. “But we're not like a supermarket where a customer can run up a bill of a $150 or more. We're there to serve household corporate name, but it more than 1,100 so-called convenience stores in six Canadian provinces and parts of the United States. i Last’year, the corporation's sales approached $500 million, and Findlay confidently expects to exceed that this year. Sileorp has, either through direct operations or over Mac's stores and Baskin-Robbins ice cream outlets in Canada, plus Hop-In and FarrView stores in the United States. SERVE 230 MILLION What does it take to churn up half a billion in sales from such drop-in stores? “The average sale, our figures show, totals $2.06,” Findlay says. “So that means we served about 230 million customers last year. In our Mac's stores, we had 200 million. So you can figure out what they're worth.” The concept of whata xonvenience store should offer has changed radically since Mac's first started in 1961. For 12 years as the chain expanded, the stores were known as Mac's Milk, although that name hasn't been used officially -since-1973. or fra) who comes in because he’s forgotten something or wants quick service. “If he wants to use a credit card, why not?” SELL LIQUOR Findlay, a Toronto native, worked at his family's dairy plant during summers while completing a commerce degree at the University of Toronto in 1948. “When I graduated, we decided we needed an ice cream side of the operation. My father lent me some money and I bought out .a small plant.” Through a series of corporate manoeuvres, the family dairy and ice cream operations were sold in 1966 to Silverwood Dairies Ltd. in London, Ont., and Findlay joined the new owners as a senior executive. __:Silverwood then bought into Mac's. As the final move in a complicated corporate arrangement, Silver- wood's dairy operations were sold, and Silcorp emerged with what Findlay judged the most valuable assets — Mac's convenience stores, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and the U.S. holdings. . eeres eT Despite the competitiveness in his business, Findlay denies he’s a workaholic> “My father always told me, ‘You leave your work behind you when you go home.’ I try to do that.” Western Canadian Company YOUR SATISFACTION 1S OUR MAIN CONCERN. 2 CONVENIENT LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU * CASTLEAIRD PLAZA x DOWNTOWN Until 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. z Prices effective until Saturday, August 10, 1985 “the big, big buy this week” Government inspected poultry whole e Canada u fresh frying -chicken 2.18 ks Ib. 99 16’ in stock, other sizes available.
