‘The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, July 3, 1991 1921, Katherine Mocers had seen etter days. In years gone by, she and her hubby had travelled to Alaska following the lure of gold. The Mooers had struck it rich and returned to Seattle financially set for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, Mr. Mooers went lo that great gold mine in the sky in the spring of 1915, ‘ate went downhill after that. Always a lover of whisky, which she downed neat, she now hit the sauce with a vengeance. Bulges protruded where they had no right to be. Wrinkle lines resembling a road map crisscrossed her once altractive face. Kate's entire appearance wasn’t enhanced that much when she dyed her graying hair a deep scarlet, She lived in a luxurious apartment building, admired her jewellery, and now and then tallied up her fortune, which, in round figures, came to three million dollars. In 1921, when hotdogs were a nick three big ones was a'king's ransom::**- ~~ a It was the cold, hard cash that attracted no+.+1-: q goodnik Jim Maloney jo,Kate Mooers, Jim, whose. most recent address was prestigious Walla Walla Penitentiary, was a thief and part-time bootlegger. He met Kate and made her inviting wad.his personal target. Before you could say gold digger, Jim was visiting Kate and her jewellery all the time. ime. 5 When certain members of the Seattle police force’ heard of Jim’s interest in Kate, they called on the widow wilh a bil of fatherly. advice. Kate.teld them in no uncertain terms, to mind their own business. , Kate and Jim saw each other every day. Slowly, he gained her confidence until he was advising her” on financial affairs. Then, with his parole officer acting as best man, Jim and Kate became husband. and wife. Several Seattle deteclives with inside _ knowledge of Jim's character couldn't believe that he was up to any good. They kept tabs on the newlyweds, waiting for a crime to happen. They didn’t have long to wait. Jim was observed entering a hardware store and ~ TO YOUR uP 4 Se a WHY NOT INVITE 17,000‘ PEOPLE RAGE SALE! Besides Jim had done a lot of gardening at Walla Walla, so it was only natural that he keep up with his hobby, When police learned that Mr. and Mrs, Maloncy had left town, they decided to investigate. The Janitor of the Matonoy'’s apartment building told lice that the pair had gone to Cuba, He had ed Jim's empty trunk up from the basement joodbye to ered, seen im that his wife had gone.on ahead. : He also told police that he had not seen the trunk » again. Jim had told him that his wife had hired a couple of expressmen to carry the trunk out of the apartment, ., The police took a look at the ompty fpartment, which had not been cleaned since the Maloneys vacated. They found everything In order. There - were, however, tiny ‘hair-iike strands of rope on the bedroom et. Police felt these strands were part of a rope which had been rubbed tight against an object. They theorized that Jim could have killed his wife, placed her‘in the trunk, and tied the trunk with the remainder of the rope he had purchased at the hardware store.' The hardware store owner told detectives his jad 10 poun an 100 feet of rope. A sample of the quicklime laced arden was analyzed. From the sample, it was learned that i one pound of had been mixed into the garden. Forty two feet of the rope had been used to encircle the garden. When detectives found out that Kate had cashed a $90,000 .cheque on the day of her disappearance, the hunt was on for Jim Maloney. Trucking companies were canvassed in an attempt to locate the men who had, carried the trunk out of the apartment building, This tangent of the investigation ted nowhere, but a check of telephone calls from Kate's eek “plone revealed that she had called a Mrs. Raymond sworth in Vancouver, B.C. ‘ When police called Mrs. Elfsworth, they learned she was Kate's niece. Mrs. Ellsworth told them she had received a letter from Kate only two days 5 ~earlier.iIt;had been sent from St. Paul, Minnesota, and advised her that Kate was leaving for Cuba. The letter had been typewritten and signed Aunt ‘ Kate. When the writing was compared to Kate's flgndure ‘on authentic bank documents, it proved to ea forgery, ; i )Detegtives, now hot on the trail of what they assumed to be a murder, travelled to St. Paul. They ’'+" discovered that a Mr. and Mrs. Maloney had =< ee rea ‘ ‘checked out of the St, Francis Hotel the day after the dato on the fotter recolved by Kato’s niece, ‘Hotel employees were questioned, They well remembered tho Malonoys. In public, Mrs, Maloncy had been heavily velled. However, a.mald had seen Mrs. Maloncy without her veil, In fact, she had seen Mrs, Maloney wilh nothing on at all, Sho had knocked on the Maloncy's door and, receiving no anawer, had entered to make up tho roo! m, » Interrupting Mr. and Mrs, Maloney in a most compromising position, The mald sald Mrs, Maloney. was no more than 25 years of age and had a@ striking figure. She'didn't describe Jim's figure. Jim had dictated the letter to n hotel employco and had taken it away to have It signed by his wife, or so he had told the hotel secretary. The secretary ‘volunteered that she was also a nolary pute, Jim had explained to her that his wife was indisposed, He dictated a power of attorney letter giving him tho right te at nis wife's moncy on deposit in a Seattle bank. When asked if sho had witnessed Kate's signature, the notary admitted that she had bent the rules, When Jim gave her a large tip, she had allowed him to have his wife sign the power of attorney in the privacy of her own room. Detectives checked the bank and found that Jim had called there, met wilh a vice president, presented the power of attorney letter and had every right to withdraw $400,000, which was the amount on deposit: But Jim hadn't withdrawn a dime. For one thing, he had $90,000 and didn’t need the money, He also was clever cnough to know that if pollce figured out the whole thing, they stlll would have quite a job proving that a crime had taken place. Bold as brass, Jim returned to Seattle and moved into his old apartment, Armed with the forged leller and the forged power of attorney, the police picked Jim up and booked him on suspicion of murder. How did Jim get the trunk out of the house and where did he stash it without being seen? For a full month, divers searched for the trunk in nearby Puget Sound, without success. When detectives located a bootlegger who had helped take the trunk out of the apartment building, they knew they were close to paydirt, The boollegger had been told the trunk was [ull of Nquor. He tad helped Jim put it in the back of a black car. During their conversation, he thought he had heard some mention of Union jay. Divers searched Union Bay and immediately came up with a water soaked trunk securely bound with rope. Inside was the badly decomposed body of Kate Maloney. Her body had been tiberally sprinkled with quicklime. Positive identification was established through dental records, Detectives measured the length of rope used to bind the trunk. It measured 58 feet, the exact amount left over from the 100 feet Jim had urchased. He had already used 42 feet to enclose jis garden. Jim Maloney and his dream of getting away with marrying a rich widow and murdering her for her “money crumbled away to dust. So did Jim. He was hanged within the confines of his old home, Walla Walla Penitentiary. ans “school B t-1 Towne “e Stay-in (NC)-OTTAWA—Recognizing, tisk factors may ‘be useful in ‘| cou ing ci that ung people dropping of's cliool, says the Canadian Personal: low low self- unpopular, feel “as troubl *. In the wee hours of the morning, I think my sister's husband awakened me and we had sex. I wouldn't exactly call it rape, but it was the next thing to it, I didn't scream because I didn't want to frighten my little nieces and nephews who were asleep upstairs, The next day, I told my best friend what I thought had hap- pened, She advised me to keep my mouth shut because it would only Cause trouble. To be perfectly hon- est, Ann, I may have dreamed the whole thing. There is no way I can prove that it actually happened, I took my friend's comments seri- ously and decided to say nothing, Two weeks ago, my sister caught her husband cheating. She is now filing for divorce. He is denying everything and says she is crazy. I believe I could help her case by telling about the incident that happened in their livingroom 15 years ago.
