THe Masseo BANDS OF Mave: HousEHOLD CAVALRY THE BLACK WATCH FRIDAY Wednesday, August 9, 1995 wath The Castlegar Sun Page A9 ag law violates freedom of speech Dear Editor: BC voter Bob Foret began a constitutional challenge July 17 in the province's Supreme Court to have the NDP government's elec- passed only days carlier tion gag law - struck down. The gag law threatens citizens with fines or jail if they spend more than $5,000, indi- vidually or as a grolp, to support or oppose political parties or candidates during provin- cial elections. Similar restrictions apply to party leadership contests and initiative and recall votes. The arrogance of Premier Harcourt's govern- memt is really quite breathtaking, B.¢ entrusted him and his party with power Harcourt and his ilk then used that power to threaten citizens with jai) if they effectively exer cised their freedom of speech during elections! Foret believes that this gag law violates the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of speech and association and the right to an T informed vote, So do we and that's why we have opposed this law from the beginning and are paying Foret’s court costs. It’s not the first time we've fought to voters defend Canadians’ fundamental freedoms. In 1984 we succeeded in having the courts strike ($) down an election gag law passed by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government and in 1993 did the same with a gag law passed by Brian Mul roney's Tories Both Trudeau and Mulroney needed the courts to teach them about the importance of free speech, ks to Mr. Foret, we believe that Pre mier Harcourt and his government will soon be given the same lesson Value and quali great selection. SUN PHOTO / Derek Zeisman Gouk opts out Submitted Kootenay West-Revelstoke MP, Jim Gouk, has officially opted out of the so-called modi- fied MP’s pension plan. Some time ago, Gouk advised that he did not object to the idea of an MP pension provided that it was fair to the taxpayers who are themselves being asked to deal with government cutbacks and reduction of services. The new Liberal legislation reduces pension benefit accrual by one per cent but also reduces the cost to MPs by two per cent. This-still leaves MPs with a plan that/costs the taxpayer $4 for every dollar contributed by the MP. The Reform Party attempted to amend the legislation to reduce the benefit to an even dollar for dollar match which is compatible with most private sector pen- sions. The government turned this down. The government also made provisions to ensure that anyone elected prior to 1993 will contin- ue to get all the provisions of the old pension plan for their pre- 1993 time. “T stated that if I had to choose between an overly generous pen- sion during a time of restraint or no pension at all, I would go without a pension. The legislation allows a one time opportunity for current MPs to opt out of the plan if they do not like it,” said Gouk. “I have notified the govern- ment that I am saying no thanks to their generosity with the tax- payer's money. If they had a con- science, they would do the same thing.” QUARTER POUND BOTTOM BLADE STEAK Beet Chuck Steak Super Pack 4.14 kg/b Regular or Seasoned lucerne. Frozen. Gustafson said the generator for lift station will insure that waste water continues moving through sewer pipes to the city's sewage lagoons in Brilliant, should any unexpected power failures occur. “If the power is out for much more than an hour, the {lift station's} sewage process- ing chamber begins to fill.” That, explained Gustafson. could result in the chamber overflowing — a most unappe- tizing scenario.
