The black bear (ursus ameri canus) is the smallest of the three North American bear species. It belongs to the Ursidae, a family that originated as a branch of the Canidae or dog family, some 25 million years ago! While the ow is found only in North America, it emigrated from Asia by crossing the Bering Strait approximately 500,000 years ago. The black bear is a compact but 2 weighs between 280 kilograms and will measure from 130 to 190 centimetres in length compensated by highly developed senses of smell and hearing. Bears look slow and cumbersome as they shuffle about over the course of the day but observers should not be fooled. If necessary, a bear can run at about 56 kilometres an hour! Black bears will frequently. sit up on their haunches to try and detect odours that may mean some thing good to eat, carrion is a welcome treat! However, they are predominantly vegetarian and nerally forage for everything from catkins in the spring to berries and nuts in the fall Mixed forest provides a variety of vegetation and habitat, necessary for the not-so-cuddly but fascinating black bear to thrive If you would like to learn more about the black bear, please contact: The Fur Institute of Canada, 255 Albert Street #804, Onawa Canada K IP 6A9. It served to stimulate and finance continental exploration and provided a source of income that was crucial to many early colonial ventures. It en- ged the aboriginal people of the continent in a global market economy for the first time and, in the process, radically transformed their traditional cultures. The early fur trade led to the of the first business enterprise, the NorthWest Company, and it spawned North America’s oldest multinational re source and trading company, The Hudson's Bay Company. Finally, it was an important component of the im perial rivalries that served to shape the political map of North America! (Arthur J. Ray.
