W..P. Jones Seeks the Pro- tection.of the Police. SAYS HER HUSBAND IS BRUTAL Claims He Does Not Provide for Her—Threatened Her With Butcher Knife. The woes of an unhappy woman are the subject af deep but silent scrutiny by the police department. Mrs. W. P. Jenes made complaint at the local de- partment of justice several days. ago lax in his method of providing for her subsistence and who is brutal in his treatment of her, The community, with the corner of Third avenue for a nucleus, has been agog with gossip. con- cerning the martial discord existing in the Jenes household, and while it-was a topic of seme-secret conversation during afternoon teasa few days ayo, the re- cent developments in which a police of ficer fignred, and some ‘Shadowing’’ was done a la Scotland Yards, has ob- literated the obstacles in the way of publicity and brought to Jight a pecaliar story. It is not known to any one except ‘those chiefly i d just what took place then, but it is quite likely that Mrs. Jones told the same story, the substance of which a Record represen- tative obtained from credible witnesses, and which followa: W. P. Jones isa Welshman by birth and while in the old country he and his prerent wife were united in marriage. One child was born to them but it died several years ago. Mrs. Jones says that her husband did not treat ber properly while they lived in England, and that after he went to the New world to seek his fortune, and wrote her letters beg- ging her to juin him, her brother advised her tolet him shift for himself. She did not heed brotherly advise, however, and abouta year ago joined her husband in Rossland. Mrs, Jones fled to the house of a neighbor several days sgo for protection. She said that her husband, enraged by being overwrought over fancied urievan- ces against her had choked her and threatened tocut her throat with a butcher knife which be flourished over his head. Mr. Jones is working at the Le Roi mine. Her existance here she says has been even more miserable than it was in old England. She has been living with her sympathising neighbors - for some time claiming that her husband did not provide her with food, that he abused her and on various occasions had threatened to take her life. This ma: not be true but many of the families of her acquaintancrs believe her story and have tried to alleviate her sufferings. Ste was finally prevailed upon to seek the protection of the Jaw, though she shrank from the publicity it would oc- cagion, still she asserted that her trest- ment at the hands of her husband was lice Magestrate Jordan which was to have been given today, was adjourned to tomorrow.
