.. ALK On Tuesday evening I travelled to Nelson with the Junior Warriors to watch the game between the Rossland team and the Junior Maple Leafs and I would like to pass along some of the things that occurred to me as I watched the contest. It seems to me that every time these teams meet, especially games played in Nelson, the emphasis is on as much rough stuff as the officials will let go. Two or three times they were on the verge of erupting and at the game's end a Nelson player wanted to take on Terry Halisheff and when that was prevented the teams headed for their respective dressing rooms without the benefit or whatever, of the traditional hand-shake. The timing device in the Nelson arena looks as if the players who play there have been taking deliberate potshots at it and apparently it is out of order. The timekeepers used a time clock in the box and every once in a while they would announce the time left in penalties or the period over the speaker system. This worked out OK until things got a little complicated when Rick Woodhouse was given a game misconduct plus a major and a minor penalty. Brian Edwards who was supposed to sit out the seven minutes ended up sitting out nine minutes because of confusion on the part of the timekeeping crew. After the match Coach Buhr went to the referees room and questioned this and the referee admitted that the volunteer staff had made a boo-boo, but in .his words, " these guys are all volunteers and if we start correcting them they'll stay away and we'll have nobody." It seems to me this is a lame excuse. I know that Nelson has had a Jot of trouble attracting fans to their junior games but actually on Tuesday I thought they had a resonably good crowd compared to some I've seen there. Can they keep up this does a pretty convincing job fantastic pace? Time will tell! lame excuse. I know that Nelson has had a lot of trouble attracting fans to their junior games but actually on Tuesday I thought they had a resonably good crowd compared to some I've seen there. But wouldn't you think ihat a city like Nelson could find some responsible people to do their timekeeping job? Most other towns who have junior or senior hockey have the people to take care of this vital part of the game and I don't think many of them are paid to do it either. There's no doubt that Nelson has a pretty strong junior team this season, and I saw a lot of good moves out there on Tuesday night. Their number seven, Richichi, impressed me with some really clever moves and the defence seemed to know what they were doing when moving the puck out of their own end. The play of the team as a whole is geared to a lot of heavy checking, not always too refined, but for a while on Tuesday it was effective. When the big Rossland defencemen started replying in kind the Maple Leaf defence sort of pulled in their horns, so it looks as if that's the way the Warriors will have to contend with the Leafs if they are to come out winners in future games in Nelson; that ipid staying out of the penalty box. Hopefully, the Civic Centre will be equipped with a time clock before too long. It would prevent a lot of confusion for the timekeepers and add to the fans' enjoyment of the game. Meanwhile, the Warriors are beginning to get it together, from the goal out where Hoss Drake and Syd Harry cannot be faulted for any team shortfalls, both are playing fine goal. Hoss was in fine shape in Nelson on Tuesday and Syd could not be charged with the 11-4 loss to Barry Luce and company from Columbia Valley. The team has acquired another big defenceman from Penticton in the person of John Jorgenson, who played in Nelson and was pretty impressive. When you put him alongside the likes of Jim N~roff, Dave Foyle, Rocky Ponton, Rick Woodhouse, Peter Corrado and Mike Bolton you have defencemen who are going to give o~ posing forwards a lot tQ think about. Up front two of the most impressive players to date are big boys too. Terry Halisheff and Marty Lizotte make a pretty good scoring combination and they are
