Speer en mcnhatyen nanan SITLL ISIS A NT NIT ITE CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, December 16, 1976 By Pastor Donald W. Reed Famine... * earthquakes... racial hatred... civil strife... cevclation se yi With these as he daily headlines is it reason- ble or realistic to be joyful this hristmas season? Isn't the hristmas story juat part of the *" piate of religion that drugs a certain type of individual, re- ligious by nature, and supplies temporary euphoria amid isin? In other words, isn't the ingel's announcement of “good dings of great joy" incredible ind illusory? The Christian is not afraid from God's intervention in istory. Jt is founded upon the incarnation of the Son of God ind His consequent death upon the cross, His joy is the result of apprehending the meaning of the angels’ message, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.” You cannot separate Beth- eaves ee enee nese ees e S angel put it so clearly, “Thou + shalt call His name Jesus for He 2 shall save His people from their” : sins.” Paul meant exactly the zsame thing when he said, 2 "Christ Jesus came into the ; world to save sinners,” : It is because the Christian “knows the certainty of what : Funeral Service :For Amy Cooper ‘Held in Trail Funeral services were'con- ; ducted from Knox United ‘Church in Trail last Thursday :_afternoon for © Amy » Evelyn Cooper, 70, of Castlegar, who died Dec. 6at the Castlegar and God did at Bethlehem that he confidently rests his life’ on what He did later at Calvary, There’ "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself.” The commemoration of Christmas has become artificial ‘and mawkish. Christ did not come to be fondled by unbe- lievers as the Babe of Bethle- em. He came to be acknowl- edged and accepted in humble faith as the Lord of Life, People who sentimentalize about the Infant Jesus have no place in their hearts for. the cruci- fied Savior atid the Risen Lord. The same world that gushes over the Babe in the. manger continues to reject the Christ ‘on the cross, Christmas calls for faith not fiesta;. for homage not hilarity; for aurrener not and wondered. The wise men worshipped and kneeled. The angles sang and praised. All alike caught the force of that tremendous truth, “Today in the city of David has been born for you a Savior who is Christ the ‘Lord, ; How contradictory it is that man has changed Christ- mas from a ‘silent, . . holy hight’ into an uprourous night- maré. The modern celebration of Christmas is a sacrilege and sham. There must be a better way to commemorate the birth- day of the holy Son of God, The real purpose of Christ’s coming was to offer up His life for the sins of men. He was born to die. That is the heart of Christmas. This Christmas sea- son, take time to meditate, to sing, to give thanks, to pause in ‘I wonderment, to bow and wor- ship. Then perhaps Christmas will become the sacred season it ought to be. Billy Graham, Once A Teenage Salesman Would the now interna- tionally-famous crusading evan- gellst, Billy Graham, be as successful in any other profes- sion—like a Fuller brush sales- man, for instance? He certainly would—and as a young teenage lad in “his hometown of Charlotte, N.C., he did exactly that—and was rapidly climbing the salesman’s © ladder of success. At 17 and fresh out of high school, the’ frail-looking - Billy with a winning personality and magnetic smile, embarked on a . selling career, disposing’ of more brushes than Fuller could saddle him with. He. sold them to impov- erished families who could hardly afford the price of a comb, He left them with the rich, with topnotch executives, with business firms and with ‘countless housewives. ‘His door-to-door sa! é He tossed and turned— thinking, always thinking—and ‘then listening intently to the voice inside of him which led _, him to. quiting, his job with gon convinced District: Hospital, followidg'a™_ that‘there could be no true lengthy illness. Born in Rosetown, Sask., Aug, 11, 1906, Mrs. Cooper had lived in Trail for $8 years before moving to Castlegar recently. She had also lived in Edmonton and Vancouver. She was a member of Knox United Church in Trail. Mrs. Cooper is survived by ber husband John; a son, Jack of Castlegar; a daughter, Mrs. ‘Jim (Dianne) DeLong in Tur- key; seven grandchildren; two brothers,’ Jim Smith of Van- couver and Roy Smith of Kelowna; and two sisters, Meryl Pritchard of Vancouver and Edna Sowerbey of Oliver. Rev. What changed the course _ of events in the ambitious lad’s “life happened one night when one of the company’s represen- tatives urged him to tag along to listen to a young evange- list speak. He enticed Billy by telling him that he would learn an awful lot about selling tech- niques from this particular preacher, Intrigued, Billy tailed Re the ministry of the gospel. Billy enrolled in the Flor- ida Bible Institute and two years later he was ordained. : When Billy now looks back on those days, he remembers mostly how friends and col- leagues laughed’ at him and thought him ‘crazy’ for aban- doning a career in which he was obviously tops.” But he knows now—and they know too, that his guid- ance came from up above.
