JOHN KEREIFF There’s funk all it! €r€ S TUNK all Over It! “ONE HOT MINUTE” Red Hot Chili Peppers (Warner Bros.) oe P12 It'll be interesting to hear what the fans have to say about this one! “One Hot Minute” is funk, rock. and psychadelia in one. Not unexpected, but it causes some to ask “what the...?” “One Hot Minute” has folks saying the band has gotten away from their early funk roots. Singer Anthony Kiedis begs to differ, saying “The fank*is so subtle, it eludes shallow interpretation...there’s funk a over this record.” . ROCK Gotta agree with him —" there. ® — FILE After four or five spins, I’m thinking that what's throwing people is this album is smoother than “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”. If “One” was easy to get a handle on, I'd be bummed. The records that stay with you are the ones that take some effort to cozy up to. “One Hot Minute”, produced (as was the last disc) by Rick Rubin, is The Chili's first record with new guitarist Dave Navar- ro...maybe THAT'S the new variable we're noticing. “I come from a slightly different place, musically speaking” says Dave, “these guys are percussive and sharp-edged, and I’m into melodic and ethereal sounds.” With that quote, the new album makes more sense. Key tracks: “Warped”, “Aeroplane” and ““Tearjerker”. The Pep- pers make records to please themselves, the best reason of all to be a band. Fans with a taste for further adventure will surely follow along. Indications are that they will..."One Hot Minute” debuted on the charts at #6 last week. “Great? Nah...but REALLY good! “ “THE ESSENTIAL SOFT ROCK COLLECTION” Various Artists (WEA) see You'll see ads for this everywhere shortly as WEA mounts a huge advertising campaign behind “The Essential Soft Rock Col- lection”...a gathering of predictable dreck, and tres groovy tunes as well When I hear ‘soft’, weds like limp and flaccid come to mind...but there’s decent mi here. “Essential Soft Rock” is a set of 16 songs, mostly ballads. Need to mellow out? Here ya be Before you buy “Soft”, do you even like this kind of music? How many of these songs do you already have? Are there enough on this disc that you don't have to warrant the purchase? I like soft rock on occasion and of the 16 cuts, I only had 6 on other discs. Key tracks: “The Living Years” by Mike and The Mechanics, and Simply Red's version of “If You Don't Know Me By Now”. “The Essential Soft Rock Collection” entered the charts last week at #61, but I expect it will visit at least the 30's before it peaks.
