AWFUL DISASTER Already 187 Bodies Have Been Taken From Utah Coal Mine’ ~~ MANY MORE TO COME The Explosion at Schofield Caused by Blowing Up of Blasting Powder—All the Company's Buildings are Ocoupied by the Dead Await- ing the Inquest. Salt Lake, Utah, May 2.—Two hundred or more lives were lost in the explosion in mine No.4 of the Pleasant Valley Coal company yes- terday at Schofield, Utah. One hundred and thirty-seven bodies have already been recovered. The work of rescuers is still proceeding although tnere is no hope that any of the men who are unaccounted for escaped death. The scene of the disaster is just outside this place on the line of the Rio Grande Western railroad. The explosion which occured in the winter quarters of the mines is attributed by some to the blowing up of a number of cans of blasting powder. A special train was sent trom Salt Lake bearing Superinten- dent Sharpe, of the coal company, Superintendent Wilby of the rail- road company, and some doctors. As fast as bodies are reached they are taken to the boarding houses and other company build- ings, where they are dressed and prepared for the coroner's inquest. These buildings are numerous and in each are from 10 to 15 bod- ies which are laid in long rows. To those which have been identi- fied are tags with names and addresses. These await the com- ing of relatives or friends. Two hundred coffins have been ordered through local undertakers to be sent atonce to the scene of the disaster. ‘TODAY'S STOCK SALES. This ground has been in contention for the past four or five years and, notwithstand- ing that the member from this dis- trict, James Martin, promised to se- cure these lands for the people, the matter is now no nearer settlement than it was four year ago. C. mine in Summit camp had a nar- row escape from destruction by fire yesterday. A heap of brush along the railway spur near the dump was being burned, and the sparks car- ried by the wind ignited thd ad- jacent dry grass, trees, cordwood, stumps etc. Soon it extended over several acres. The heat was ter- rific. All the miners above ground were formed into a bucket brigade, direc- ted by Superintent Scratford and Accountant Mackintosh. A fire hose did good service but the flames were not checked until they had reached within twenty feet of the powder house, where thou - sands of pounds of explosives were stored. One shack was destroyed, and the occupant, a miner, had a narrow escape. Standing on the spur were a number of cars loaded with dynamite. .They received a scorching, but were shifted down the track in time. . After half an hours work the wind shifted in an opposite direc- tion. The fire then swept through dry trees and finally exhausted it- selfin the green timber. Several acres were swept over. At one time it looked as though the fire would extend across the hill to Summit city. Mr, Mac- kintosh sent a warning and Colonel Haywood and the inhabitants turn- ed out prepared for any emergency. Ross Thompsor, who has just returned from # trip to. the Oro De- noro mine in Summit camp, brings news that a parallel ledge to the one already developed has been un- covered on that property. ‘*We knew this vein ran through our ground, for it showed in an open cut. on the railroad and we have now stripped it at a point 300 feet west of the shaft. It has 20 feet of good copper ore and we are now making an open cut along it. Work will be started immediately to extend the lower tunnel for a dis- tance of about 300 feet,. where we expect to tap this new ledge at a depth of about 200 feet. “Things are very quiet in the Boundary country and are likely to continue so until after the election. The Knob Hill, Ironsides and B. C. are still running full blast, but most of the other mines are shut down.
