a4 Saturday, August 22, 1992 @ Nine to FIVE department store Woodwards Ltd. continues to lose money despite reporting increased sales. Second quarter losses totalled $10.6 million, despite sales improving marginally over the same quarter last year. The store’s chief financial advisor says Woodwards has changed its product mix to meet the needs of the middle income family. MERGER MEANS JOB CUTS A report out of the Western Centre for Economic Research states that a merger between Air Canada and the U.S. airline PWA would mean big job losses in B.C. and Alberta. Researchers claim the merger would make many western Canadian positions redundant, and would see as many as 4,000 jobs disappear. SOUPY BOSS A report from the Toronto Globe and Mail claims that the head of Thompson Newspapers is lining up the head of the Cambell Soup Co. to take over as the Globe's next publisher. Cambellis and Thompson have not confirmed the report. WorkRPLACE Tuto he Wild blue yon News photo by Neil Rachynski It's plane to see why Conair pilot Tim Paul gets such a rush from flying the new Turbo Firecat. Neil Rachynski NEWS STAFF icture this: screaming over mountainous terrain in an Persie. a raging forest fire below with thick smoke rising to the sky, and having to steady your nerves to make 3,300 litres of fire retardant hit the mark. Tim Paul calls it the best job in the world. The Turbo Firecat check pilot was in Castlegar recently to show off the latest wares from Abbotsford-based Conair Aviation Ltd. The company has developed a turbine-driven aircraft that is more efficient than previous piston engine airplanes. Paul says this development makes Conair the leaders on the global market for manufacturing aircraft designed specifically for fighting forest fires. “The top three things about the Turbo Firecat is that it is faster, more reliable and safer than the piston engine planes,” Paul said. he airplanes were originally military trackers used in the [sens and 70s, and were retired about three years ago. Conair scooped them up and converted them to piston engine Firecats. Now, Conair has moved to the turbine Firecat model. The move is paying dividends. “We've built seven Turbo Firecats for firefighting departments in France, and we're pursuing markets in Greece, Spain and Italy,” Paul said. Right now, Canada has only one Turbo Firecat. That’s the plane Paul brought into Castlegar. “It’s a temporary contract. Our purpose is to fight fires and the B.C. Forest Services will evaluate the aircraft,” Paul said. “They’re going to decide whether or not to contract on an ongoing basis.” But the real rush for Paul is being in the air and battling forest fires. “It gets your adrenaline going,” he said. “You feel like you're accomplishing something. “T’m one of those people that thinks he has one of the best jobs in the world.” Okay, but doesn’t he get nervous up there? “No. I’m more conscious of being careful and not taking any chances,” he said. onair’s philosophy of fighting forest fires is initial attack. Rather than focusing on dumping as much fire retardant as it can on a blaze, air crews concentrate on getting to the scene as fast as possible to contain the fire. Although it’s the first time the Turbo Firecat has been in Castlegar, it’s not the first time for Paul. “I went to Selkirk College,” he said. “I graduated from the aviation program in 1977. It was a two-year course, and it probably wasn’t as hard then as it is now getting work as a pilot.” So keep your head up, the next time a Turbo Firecat zooms overhead it could be Paul heading off into the wild, blue yonder. Three cheers for Ron Armbruster and the rest of the folks at Time Air. The airline was generous enough to pick up the tab for Kirstin Mason’s flight to Penticton. She was competing at the Miss Interior B.C. pageant. Bottom Nice corporate gesture. Line eee Le NeilRACHYNSKI 4 Here’s a waste of time and money.
