Our juniors did very well in the Rossland tournament, Tommy De Paoli and Albino Silva won in the boys’ doubles while Mark Steenvoorden and Pino Laurino were runners up. Well done, boys! Over in Nelson some of the senior players were finishing up events in the West Koote- nay Open held two weeks ago. Barry De Paoli took the men's singles and Laurie Lyons re- ceived « consolation award, ‘In the Men's Doubles event, Barry teamed with Jeff Pantages and were victorious. In the Mixed Doubles, Jeff Pantages and Kay Jones won. Congratulations to you all. There were $2 participants in our fun tournament last Sunday. Frank Steenvoorden ‘Sr. was the men's high with a 6.3 game average while Her- . man Kemperman was runner- up with 5.2 average. The ladies’ high went to Marg Pondelicek with a 4.77 average and second place to. Renata Belezyk with 4.75. Selkirk Valley Girls A barbecue followed at the Steenvoorden home with 29 adults and children there. We thank Theresa and Frank very. much. The next fun tournament is July 1. There was a very poor turnout at the general meeting on Monday with 17 adults and 1 junior out of 178 adults and 212 juniors in the membership. When any tournaments are being held at the courts, you are toassume that all six courts will be used. If, however, participation is not great enough, one or perhaps two courts will be left open. If you wish to play on a tournament day you will have to take your chances as to finding a court. After that, they will pay the $1 uy, fee or purchase a weekly eT nttedtive immediatel: men's and ladies’ nights are cancelled. nights, are to remain open with the juniors still having priority on the two upper courts. Here are a few rules of behavior that should be fol- lowed by everyone who steps onto a court: © Do not hog the court. One set is generally what local tules permit. The court should be relinquished without’ grum- bling. e Singles players are ask- ed to double up if others are waiting. This, too, should be done in good grace. @ Waiting players have preference on courts that ha been. occupied by the ‘sane players for 30 minutes. Last Wednesday morning the Senlora were able to complete the program that had. been so damply interrupted the previous week. The game was ‘Two Man Best Ball and, believe it or not, 19 men took part. We did manage to get around this time and the big ball winners were Earl LeRoy and George Wilson with a neat 46, Bert Lamb and Harold Mer- rifleld had 47, Ernie Carkner and Jim Kelly 48, Joe Killough and yours truly: 49, Mike Verzuh and Bob Wadey 60, and a tie for sixth spot between Ozzie Jones and Bill Naylor and Tony Schiavon and Ernie New. ame don't know what method! was used to break’ this, but Schiavon’ and Newman em- erged as winners. This week's competition will be back to some form of straight golf under the capable guidance of Bob Wadey and Ernje Carkner. With the ad- vent of good weather we hope to have had a big increase in attendance ‘The big affair later on that same day was a Bingo, Bango, Bongo competition, managed by the team of Jack Osachoff, Elmer Pellerine, H. Dahn ‘and D. Poole. P, Van n was also supposed to take part but” was unable to be present, but the boys managed not too badly without him. A total of 84 golfers took part and 21 balls were given out to the best golfers or biggest sandbaggers, take your pick. Top group with 11 points were D, Calder, J. Koenig and D. Wickett. Right behind at 10 were W. Kaiflo, C. Christensen, T. Wil- son, E. Carkner, R. Wilson and D. Jones. Then came T. Leckie, R. Belton, P, Remillard, J. Tressider, A. Cheveldave, J. Osachoff and L. Buttons are being made up, Ifyou can tell what all that means you are a better figure- outer than lam. Whatever it is, it will have been run by Ken Seott, John Landis, G. Boyd, Ernie Mills and Peter Young talking about over at the golf course. To think was to act and ‘Slim’ was soon the proud possessor of this fine emblem. Next problem; how to mount it? It ao happened that one of the members knew of a friend who was a keen woodworker, ‘This friend had been fortunate enough to obtain a section of wooden railing from an old salling warship, the nee Enterprise which had decommissioned over 150 — ago. When it .was. finally dismantled, he had come into, possession of . this. piece of, railing. io gladly donated about 15 inches ef this to the project after he had worked and polished it into really fine shape, The final touch came when, through the services of a local carver, a miniature sun- flower was placed in the eagle's ak. When finally assembled it became not only a fine trophy but a real collectors’ item, one that any club could feel real pride in being associated with. Tam aure that, as the years go by, the trophy ‘will be led as one of the finest traditions of our golf club and one that will be keenly con- tested for each event. The Gleneagles tourna- ment is held on Thanksgiving weekend and it would be a wonderful thing if a goodly bunch of the local boys could arrange to take it in. Talking to some of those who have already taken part, I am assured that it will be a weekend long to remember. The gang down there are almost as friendly as the bunch up here and they really go overboard to show their vis- itors a good time. Should ; anyone be interested he can get * all the information necessary from Denny. Keep it in mind. At the risk of being repetitive I would like once | more to say a few words about bottles, On the way up to the course at the weekend I count- ed five pop bottles beside the road between the gate and the parking lot, There were also three other types discarded there. _ Tam continually picking them up from the course itself, usually at the side of the fairways, but sometimes even out .in ‘the open. If this continues I am gure the execu- tive will have to take action and really lower the boom on the offenders if the club is to maintain any sort of a decent $ reputation, If you are enjoying a refresher’ on the course it should not be too hard to carry the bottle, can or whatever to the next tee where there will be aplace to deposit it. Should you find one carelessly dropped where it shouldn't be, please pick it-up and'do likewise. A little thought goes a long way. Softball Play-Offs This Saturday at Kinnaird Park District 10 (East and West Kootenay) Midget and Bantam girls’ softball playoffs are to be held this’ Saturday at the Kinnaird Ball Park. As a follow-up to the account of our Sunflower Open there is a little sidelight that has a rather interesting story attached. I did mention last week about our Pro Denny's dad coming up from Gleneagles and bringing a bunch of his club mates with him. What I didn’t know at the time was that this has evolved into quite an inter-club rivalry. The idea was born about three years ago and is now in ‘full bloom. : Castlegar has its Open in June while Gleneagles’ is’ in. October. Groups from each club visit the other and it was —, decided that this idea should be. developed. A bunch of the boys from) the coast, including ‘Slim’ Me- Arthur got together and plan- ned a suitable trophy to be held by the club winning the most points each year. Last year was the first time the trophy was up for grabs and it was won by the Gleneagles’ stalwarts, Castlegar came right back and right now the trophy is sitting on the display shelf of our clubhouse. The trophy is the story. Browsing through Vancouver's Chinatown one afternoon ‘Slim’ happened to see hand- carved eagle in a store window. It was a handsome looking bird and gave him a: wonderful idea for the trophy they had been Fri, 4pm. + Sat. i pm. The Bantam girls’ provin- cial finals will be held July 10 and 11 at Kelowna and the Midget division finals will be at Richmond on July 17 and 18. The Castlegar Juveniles have no. district playoffs as there are'no other registered teams in this district.
