British Museum archeologist.

“The nude body was felled
with a blow to the back of the
neck, strangled with a cord
made of animal sinews and
had its.throat slashed. Then
it was dumped face down in
the bog which at that time
was probably a pool of
water,” said Stead.

“I believe he was the vic-
tim of a very elaborate death
rite. But we know little of
Iron Age worship

The marshman was found
by men digging peat for fuel
from a bog near the town of
Wilmslow in northern Eng-
land two years ago.

It was the first such body
discovered in Britain but
Stead said similarly mutila-
ted corpses had been found in
Denmark, suggesting this
kind of death ritual was fairly
widespread.

Liverpool University an-
thropologist Robert Conolly
believes he can extract and
clone DNA, a material con-
taining the genetic blueprint
of all living things, from
muscle tissue of the body.

The available DNA will
represent only a few frag-
ments of the body's genetic
makeup — infinitely too little
to breed a “Frankenstein's
monster” in the laboratory.
But it may give important
clues to how men have
altered over the centuries.

“We will be able to com
pare the body’s DNA to
modern human DNA to see
how humans have evolved,”
Conolly said in an interview
“Mutations can occur in any
generation and there could
have been big changes in
2,500 years.”

Conolly’s team has already
discovered that the marsh-
man belonged to blood group
O and that he sufferd from an
arthritic back and ankles but
was otherwise in good health.

“He was between five feet,
four inches and five feet, six
inches tall, well-muscled’ and
well-built. His fingernails had
been clipped and were not
chipped or cracked, indicat-
ing that he did not | do manual
work,” Conolly said.

Regiment of Canadian Artillery Museum, which until
recently was content to house Canada's most extensive
collection of big guns in relative obscurity.

It fairly bristles with examples of relics such as a
mounted artillery gun used to carry Queen's Victoria's coffin
and the original block print of gunner Lt.-Col. John McCrae’s
famous First World War poem In Flanders Fields.

Although the museum draws about 8,000 visitors
annually, it wants to improve on that number, and this
summer will embark on a low-key advertising campaign
through general distribution of brightly colored posters.

RCMP may
change policy

TORONTO (CP) — The
RCMP is considering chang-
ing its recruiting policy after
complaints that its drive to
make the force more bilin-
gual has severely reduced
the number of recruits from
Western Canada.

Norman Inkster, director
of personnel at RCMP head-
quarters in Ottawa, said in an
interview that the western
provinces “have expressed
some concern, and I think
quite legitimately. We're sen-
ive to their needs.”

In fiseal 1983-84, 51 per
cent of all RCMP recruits
were from Quebec, where
only 689 of the force's 12,622
regular members are stat-
ioned.

By contrast, only 11 per
cent of recruits came from
the four western provinces,
where 7,592 Mounties are
employed.

Quebec pays nothing for
the RCMP because the
Mounties do only federal pol-
icing there. The four western
provinces, which pay the
RCMP to provide provincial
policing, have complained
that in return for western
payments the force should be
taking a fair share of recruits
from the West.

problem, Inkster said the
RCMP is considering allott
ing recruiting figures to indi.
vidual provinces.

late that by 1996, 20 per cent
of Mounties should have
French as their first langu
age. The current figure is
about 14 per cent and 10
years ago it was nine per
cent.

To reach that target, the
RCMP was forced to recruit
many new members from
Quebec, Inkster said.

The increase in the number
of recruits from Quebec has
been dramatic. In 1981-82,
Quebec provided 22 per cent
of all recruits; in 1982-83, the
figure was 27 per cent; and
by 1983-84, the last year for
which such figures are avail
able, the number has grown
to 51 per cent.

The recruitment has also
drained the pool of recruits in
Quebec. In Montreal, where
the city force goes beyond
RCMP requirements and in
sists that recruits have a col
lege degree, the municipal
government said last month
it will have to begin adver

tising outside the province
for new officers, especially
bilingual anglophones.

The RCMP recruitment
strategy has also seen an in-
creased drive to hire women,
who accounted for only 10
per cent of all recruits in
1981-82. By fiscal 1984-85,
women accounted for 56 per
cent of all recruits.

Four hundred and forty-
nine women now are Moun-
ties, earning the same salary
as men: $35,125 annually as a
constable with four years’
experience.

Overall recruiting num-
bers are down after govern-
ment cuts and a reduction in
the number of Mounties em-
ployed in provincial policing
of New Brunswick and New-
foundland. There were 980
recruits in 1981-81, compared
with just 122 in 1984-85.

“But that's Canadian, eh,” said Banks. “Canada has
never promoted a militaristic policy. It's not like we're
fighting everybody all the time.

“I don't think they (visitors) are turned off by the idea
that the museum is dedicated to war. The aim of the museum
is not to get people to sign up, but to get an interest in what
Canadian soldiers did.”

The museum opened in 1962 when it was decided that
the relics of Canada’s artillery should be gathered under one
roof. It gets most of its visitors through organized tours,
usually school groups. With a civilian staff of 10, the lion's
share of its financial support comes from the Manitoba
government.

Included in its total collection of 8,000 pieces are 60
heavy artillery guns. One is a 12-pounder mounted on wheels
that was used in Queen Victoria's funeral procession in 1901.

Other artillery includes muzzle loaders formerly used
by the Hudson's Bay Company during the fur trade, a
nine-pounder from the Riel rebellion, a gun that fired
12-pound shot during the Boer War and a host of other
artillery used during the First and Second World Wars.
