Astaphan says
Johnson on
steroids

TORONTO (CP) — Ben Johnson
told his doctor he had been taking
banned steroids since 1981, a federal
inquiry was told today

Dr. Jamie Astaphan testified he
learned of Johnson's ‘steroid © use
when they first met in the physician's
Toronto office in late 1983.

“We discussed with Ben what he'd
been taking and how regularly and
the information Ben gave me was
that he'd been taking -anabolics
(steroids) ‘since 1981," Astaphan
said

He said he then assumed control of
Johnson's drug program and saw the
sprinter ‘‘as regular as was. possible
with Ben

The doctor said he first began
prescribing performance-enhancing
durgs for Canada’s top athletes
earlier that same year because he
believed:he should take care of them.

He said he, first sought to learn
everything" he could about steroids
after Angella Issajenko, Canada’s top
sprinter for a decade, told him she
had received .the muscle-building
drugs in California from Dr. Robert

Premier promises
to pressure feds

VICTORIA (CP) — The provinces
will put pressure on the federal
government if it fails to follow
through with a promise fo introduce a
new abortion law, B.C. Premier Bill
Vander Zalm said’ today

Vander Zalm was reacting to state
ments by federal Justice Minister
Doug Lewis, who said a decision on a
new law had not been made. Lewis
said it would be difficult to draft a
new law that respected the Charter of
Rights.

“There will be pressure on them
(the federal government), I'm sure,”’

CASABLANCA (CP) — Leaders of the Arab League tried to come
to grips with the Lebanese conflict today, oe day-after_their summit
quietly welcomed Egypt back into the fold of Arab countries

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt lost no time in forcefully
expressing the views of the most populous Arab state.

“Lebanon has become a grave problem,’’ Mubarak said. ‘‘It
exhausts us and is exhausting our consciences. We must work
together to overcome this crisis before the fire overcomes us all."”

Soviets toscrap ships

LONDON (Reuter) — The Soviet Union may soon challenge the
West on the public relations front by scrapping up to 100 aging
submarines and warships lying idle in its ports, says the authoritative

do not have the same reserves of obsolete ships and could not easily

Imperial Oil issue more stocks

TORONTO (CP) — Imperial Oil is issuing up to $1 billion in stock
to pay down the massive debt it incurred with the takeover of Texaco
Canada

Imperial said it will initially issue 16.45 million class A shares at
$S1 a share — with parent Exxon Corp. to take 11.45 million of those
to maintain its 70-per-cent interest

The company’s class A stock closed Tuesday on the Toronto
Stock Exchange at $55.38, meaning buyers could be looking at a
stibstantial discount for the new shares.

Coffee goes easy on heart

CHICAGO (Reuter) —- A study of more than 6,000 U.S. men and
women has uncovered no evidence that drinking coffee leads to-heart
disease. researchers reported

Coffee intake was not associated with cardiovascular disease in
her smokers or non-smokers. irrespective of sex,”’ said the report
published in this month's Archives of Internal Medicine,

The findings came from the National Heart. Lung and Blood
Institute's long-range study of people in Framingham, Mass. it
involved an analysis of 2.648 men and 3.566 women who were studied
from 1954 to 1958 and again from 1971 to 1973

Fitweek quiet success

‘Canada’s Fitweek has become, by

all accounts, the largest celebration of

-in-the-world—one-
“third of Jall Canadians, 7.5 million
People, took »part last year at some
17,200 events.

With a rather modest budget and @
handful of corporate helpers since it
began in 1983, Fitweek has been a quiet
success story.

By no means could it claim to turn
around the country’s couch potatoes,
but asa fixture in late Spring it keeps up
the fight.

**What you ideally hope for,” says
Jean Charest, the federal minister of
youth, fitness and amateur sport,
that someone comes to one of the even-
ts and sees the value of lifelong fit-
ness.""

These are tough times for the fitness
movement. As health-care costs climb
past $40 billion a year in Canada, there
isn’t any significant shifting of money
to such preventive forms of medicine
as exercise promotion.

Corporations are increasingly
steping in with support, but Charest’s
department, which is supposed to be
taking charge, is in fact taking a budget
cut this year.

TROUBLE AHEAD

And, while the federal government
talks about how the federal deficit and
debt must be brought down so our
children and grandchildren are not
shackled, the declining sate of youth
fitness indicates the “younger
generations have as many physical as
fiscal problems ahead.

but schools don’t seem to be making

programs are still being cut, while the
association says many who teach fit-
ness and sport in schools aren’t

Fitweek’s national launch May 24
will see the release of a major study on
physical activity — a follow-up to the
1981 Canada Fitness Survey — in
which thousands of Canadians who
took part in the original report were
polled to|\see whether their fitness im-
proved or declined and why. It should
result in better information about the
state of fitness in Canada.

Provincial and territorial capitals
launch their campaigns May 26, the of-
ficial start of Fitweek. That's also the
day the government — but perhaps not
the boss — gives the go-ahead to wear
‘sneakers to work.

TOWNSCOMPETE
One highlight is the May 31 fitness

expected to attract four million people
to work out for at least 15 minutes that
day.

Apart from the provincial activities,
11 other national projects throughout
the May 26-June 4 Fitweek period in-
clude:

* A variety of events in 700 pools
to promote aquatic fitness, which
organizers hope will draw 750,000
people, making it the largest mass-
Participation aquatic promotion ever.

* More than 6,200 events in-
volving an estimated 1.7 million
elementary and secondary school
students in different activities each day
as a drive to promote daily physical

* More than 500 high schools and
200,000 students attempting the most
