For the second straight game, Cowan Office Supplies has put in a little overtime in the Kootenay West Men’s Bas- ketball League. The first time they didn’t get anything for their effort in a loss to Castlegar Realty. But this time it paid off as Office Supplies beat the Win- law Pistons 88-82 at Mount Sentinel high school Tuesday. Chad Coupland led all scor- ers in the game with 30 points, which included five, three-pointers. “I think we were up by eight or 10 with three to five minutes to go and the prob- lems just seemed to develop from there,” said Henry Van- dervelde, who had 18 for Of- fice Supplies. “At least we came out on the good end this time,” he said. Vandervelde said Coup- land’s three-point shooting was the difference in a close game that went back and forth. “He got in a stroke there with three-pointers. At that point we were down by eight or 10 and I think he stroked four or five in a row there, and that turned the game around.” Stan Soukoroff had 21 to lead the Pistons, who fell to 0- 2. In the other game Tuesday, Selkirk College moved into a first-place tie in the league by beating RHC Realty 97-44 at the College. The Trail Men’s Basketball League, in existence off and on since the late 1950’s opened another season Wednesday night at the Cominco Gym. “I think the calibre of play is about the same now as it was then,” said Terry Coombs, who played in qe ewes when he 5-years Coombs, 47, i the league now, said the league has pretty much stayed the same over the years. Coombs remembers the league’s heyday in 1963, when an all-star team from the league lost out to a coast team for the provincial champi- onship. The team, which had play- ers from Fruitvale and Genelle, also included Castle- gar resident Billy Mota. Put together just a few months before the 14-team tourney was set to begin, Team Canada beat the de- fending tournament champi- ons from Mexico, then han- dled a Red Deer, Alta, team in the final. Teams competing in the tourney came from Edmon- ton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Sur- rey, Sparwood, ish, two teams from Vancouver and three teams from Mexico. Team Canada lost its first two games but were never touched from that point on. They beat the second-rated team in Mexico 17-6 in the quarter final, which put them into the semi-final against the Mexican team which had won the tournament three out of Team Mexican team 10-3 then beat Red Deer 10-4 to win. Both Red Deer and the Mexican team had been unde- feated in the tourney to that point. In the older age group, Se- lena Fodor won a bronze medal in the Bronze Artistic event while placing fifth in the Intermediate Ladies event. That group also saw Chelsea Van Vliet finish fifth in Pre-Novice Ladies. In the Juvenile Ladies 13- -and-over category Karen Skibinski got the silver medal. Meghan Van Vliet was a bronze medalist in the Juve- nile Ladies 12-and-under event. A pair of Castlegar skaters picked up medals in the Pre- imi Ladies 11-and-over event with Michelle Kooznet- soff getting the silver and Vanessa Kastrukoff snagging the bronze. Alexis Rideout was another silver medalist for the Castle- gar Club as she placed second in the Pre-preliminary Ladies 9-10. Rosanna Sheppard picked up a third-place finish in the Pre-preliminary Ladies, 10- AS LOW AS 10¢ EACH and-under event. Teams from across the Kootenays attended the event along with clubs from Spokane and Chilliwack. ~ Meanwhile, the Van Vliet sisters placed fifth in their re- spective events in the Autumn Leaves competition in Kam- loops Oct. 19.
