Castlegar Sun Wednesday, August 18, 1993 What you should know about HIV and AIDS In British Columbia, an estimated 5,000 people are affected with the virus People with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are in the final stage of infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus attacks and destroys immune cells in their body that protect people from everyday infections and diseases such as cancer, Once enough cells are killed then the body loses its defense against other infections, allowing other infections to invade it. Once this happens, the person. 1s then said to have AIDS. Almost everyone who 1s infected with HIV will get AIDS eventually, one half within ten years. During that time, infected persons can pass the virus 6n to others. AIDS is fatal In British Columbia today, there are an estimated 5,000 people who have become infected with HIV. Since October 1983, 1,337 people have developed AIDS in B.C.. By far the majority of these cases, 86 per cent, live in Vancouver HIV is passed from one person to another through body fluids: blood, semen and vaginal fluid. In this province, 95 per cent of all known AIDS patients became infected through contact with an HIV infected partner. Most of these Cases, 90 per cent, were homosexual men (men who have sex with other men). Only 34 cases are known so far in B.C., where people contracted AIDS heterosexually (sex befween a man and a woman). However, this number will increase as more women get infected. Today, one in ten people who have HIV infection are women. These are the cells The best way to prevent infection with HIV ts to have one lifetime sexual partner, and remain faithful to that part ner. Sex with more than one partner increases your risk of HIV infection, All you can do to lessen this risk, 18 to use a MEDICAL MATTERS latex rubber condom with every sexual encounter Use only water-based lubricants based petroleum jelly weakens the condom. HIV infection is now spreading quickly among people who inject drugs such as heroin and a dangerous habit. In 68 cases of AIDS in B.C the people infected admitted to injection drug use. If you do use drugs through injection, don't share needles or syringes, you might be injecting HIV straight into your blood. Your risk of getting HIV infection from a blood transfusion is now small, The B.C. Red Cross screens all donated blood for evidence of the virus. There is no risk in donating blood, as clean needles are used every time, Do not donate blood if you have engaged in homosexual expe nences, or if you inject drugs. No one in B.C. has yet received AIDS from needles used in acupuncture, earpiercing or tattoos, and in Canada Brought to you by Castlegar's Medical Staff cocaine there is one recorded case of someone becoming infected with HIV from contact with a cut or needle-stick injury in a hospital setting. HIV infection cannot be caused through casual everyday contact, such as shaking hands, hugging kissing, coughing or sneezing. It also cannot be received by using public swimming pools, toilet seats, restaurants, mosquitos or animals If you are concemed about possible contact with HIV, have a blood test. But, from the the time of contact with HIV, it takes up to six months for the test to become posi tive. If you inject drugs, if you practice anal sex, or if you have many sexual partners, you should consider having an ALDS test. If you do test positive, there is a local AIDS support group, and your physician will be able to tell you how to delay the onset of AIDS. Remember that the infec tion can be passed on, and the symptoms of AIDS are just like the symptoms of many common illness, flu and diar thoeal disease What of the future? There is research into an AIDS vac. cine, using only a piece of the HIV, so AIDS cannot result If this vaccine is injected into our body, we can create anti bodies against this part of the virus. Hopefully, if someone does come into contact with the whole virus, the antibodies can destroy the HV before it can become an infection. For now however, our only defense against HIV is a healthy lifestyle complete with safe sex Castlegar Savings Credit Union tb) Castlegar Branch 630 - 17th St Castlegar, B.C.
