ronment for users of all ages.”

According to a 1994 survey by
the National Kitchen & Bath
“Association (NKBA), universal
design features, such as single-
handle faucets, countertops with
rounded edges, easy-to-grasp
door and drawer pulls, and multi-
level counters were included in
76, 54, 62 and 24 percent of all
kitchen jobs completed in 1993,
respectfully. Many of these
things apply to the young, as well
as the more mature, client. But
how do you start planning, what
types of things should be includ-
ed, and where do you look for
help?

“When planning a kitchen for a
maturing client, a number of
details must be considered,” Says
Snyder. “The size and shape of
the person who will be using the
space, that person's current limi-
tations, other anticipated or unan-

ticipated physical changes, and
safety all come into play.”
According to Snyder, some |
appliances can make life easier
for all clients — young, old and
in-between, such as, indoor
ice/water dispensers,’$elf-clean-
ing ovens, front-mounted con-
trols on ranges and cooktops,
easy-to-read numbers and lever-
handle controls. C-shaped door

thought must be given to accessi-
bility to all appliances, cabinets
and counters for those who are
wheelchair-bound, use a walker
or crutches. The inclusion of a
combination of these things, cus-
tomized for the user, all help
make a kitchen more easily
accessible and functional for the
aging client.

“The concept that a room
should be planned without physi-
cal limitations,-barriers or where
safety is paramount in the design,
is one that should be constant for

all ages,” Snyder says. “This—

means that the room must be safe
and usable by young children,
