A CBC’s “Street Legal” be-
gins a new season Fri-
day, Oct. 30, Olivia is preg-
nant, Chuck has traded in his
Harley for a Porsche, Leon is
heading the law firm, and ev-
erybody is as cranky as ever.
Gone is R.J. Williams, the
unscrupulous lawyer who
tried to break up the law firm
and hire Leon away. Hotshot
lawyer Rob Diamond has quit

Williams’ practice and joined
up with Chuck, Leon, Olivia
and Laura Crosby, who was in-
troduced midway through last
season. The five are now mem-
bers of Barr, Robinovitch,
Tchobanian and Associates,
the greatest bunch of bicker-
ing lawyers ever assembled
under one roof.

The personality clashes
break down as follows: Chuck
hates Rob, Rob thinks Chuck is
scum, Laura hates Olivia,
Leon has profound profession-
al differences with Chuck, and
Olivia hates everybody - espe-

cially Chuck, who is the father
of her baby but refuses to mar-
ry her and who she suspects is
fooling around with Laura.
Got it?

Since its debut seven years
ago, “Street Legal” has steadi-
ly increased its ratings, to the
point where it is now one of
CBC’s most popular dramas.
The reasons are puzzling. Why
are viewers so enamoured of a
group of TV characters who
hate each other so much that
it’s almost impossible to imag-
ine them working together as
partners in a law firm? The
jury is still out on that one.

Starring are Eric Peterson
as the principled Leon Robino-
vitch, C. David Johnson as the
shady Chuck Tchobanian, Cyn-
thia Dale as the manipulative
Olivia Novak, Albert Schultz
as corporate lawyer Rob Dia-
mond and Maria Del Mar as
Laura Crosby. Also returning
are Julie Kahner as Leon’s
wife, Alana Newman, and An-
thony Sherwood as prosecutor
Dillon Beck.

In Friday night’s season de-
but, Dillon and Chuck lock
horns in a murder trial. The
pregr Olivia has b a
recluse, refusing to go in to the
office. Rob is trying to burnish
his image, which has been tar-
nished by his association with
R.J. Williams. And Laura is
getting hot and heavy with
Chuck while Olivia broods.

Leon, meanwhile, is trying
to keep peace in the firm. At
one point he shouts, “I’m tired
of the sniping and the poison
environment around here!”

So are we, Leon. So are we.
