He then went on to graduate with a Batchelor of Science degree from Notre Dame University. His work in Africa was sponsored by the Canadian Universities Service Overseas, {CUSO); o private organization which sends qualified Can- adians, to teach and assist in tasks as required by countries of the so-called “Third World.” To prepare him for. his teaching position in Nigeria Mr. Verigin was first:given a short period of training and “orient- ation” in Canada. He was then sent toa large secondary school in Nigeria to observe some of the best Nigerian teachers in action and to learn something of the language of the area to which he would be posted, The school in which Mr. Verigin eventually taught was the Qua Iboe Mission Second- ary School with some 650 male and female students. There, he taught. mathematics at the grade 13 level. "One" of the additional * duties which Mr. Verigin’ un dertook was coaching in track and field, an area in which he himself has won many awards. He also coached and played in - the local basketball team, the only white ever to do so. This team turned out to be one of the most successful in the Province. Mr. Verigin enjoyed his stayin Nigeria and has considerable liking for the people and admiration for what they have achieved in that country in recent years. He also developed a taste for the local foods, for example; a spiced pasty mixture of fish’ and cassava flour, which he says is delicious.
