Tt is generally eG : that the scarcest commodity in ‘curling is a top notch, third ' player. There are lots of skips because it’s the glamor posi- tion, The publicity, Usually if a curler is good, he wants to skip. There is just a certain type of guy who will play third and do the job without trying to run the rink, He's got to be a fellow you can get along with, and he doesn't bug you. He's got to know the game just as if he were skipping, and he's got to have ‘courage, especially on sweeping calls, be able to make quick decisions when he sees you are not going to get the shot you are playing, either calling off the sweepers, or keeping them on the rock because he has already had the foresight to consider all the possibilities. He's got to know the angles for making fine doubles, and on hit and roll shots, and be able to tell if the shooter is going to get a couple of inches of the rock or four inches. What makes it so tough on the third when he's on the tee head is the fact he's only there for two shots an ‘end, but ‘ . . . . : . . skips. get the * "CURLING By Matt Baldwin: Sponsored by TREX AUTO BODY *: AND ENTERPRISES usually they are the two most important. One important plus if you can find it, but very few skips ever do, is a guy who throws almost ‘the same way as the skip. He comes out the same distance on his slide so that his shots act as a guideline to the skip on what he might expect from his own rocks. I know I have never had a guy playing third for me who shot the same way as me. We may have been the same on the in turn, but when it came to the out, it was a whole different ball of wax. It must be tough when the skip and third throw com. pletely opposite. Maybe that's one reason no lefthanded skip has ever won the Bricr. This naturally leads up to the question who is the best third man I've ever seen, and in my mind, that’s easy to answer: ‘Arnold Richardson who played for Ernie Richardson. The success of ‘the rink is indicative of how good he was. He worked so well: with Ernie. If Arnold thought he was calling the wrong shol, he told him. He might have'been a better shotmaker than Ernie, although Ernie was great at making the pressure shot.: CASTLEGAR NEWS Minor Hockey Results from the Castlegar Arena ‘Bantam Mise Feb, 4—Castlegar cred Union 2, Kootenay Savings 1.
