Most babies have no re- sistance to the germs which cause diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus (lock-jaw) and poliomyelitis, All babies can be protected from these diseases by immu- nization, Immunization is a means by which the body is stimulated to develop protec- tive substances against certain diseases, ‘ Immunization is sinpértai because without this protection your child can suffer from any of these diseases. Epidemics occur less often than in the past but these diseases are still present. Community-wide im- munization protects your child and all other children, Baby's immunization should be started at three months of age. Some authorities recom- mend beginning even earlier. Enquire at your local health department as to when your baby should have his injections and he vaccinated. A number of injections given at regular intervals is needed... It was noted that during the summer months, members catered to a wedding, held a farewell tea and donated a fan to the Slocan Medical Clinic. Several members met to decorate a float forsthe Labor Day Parade, which won first place. The float took on the theme of. Captain Cook, with member Mrs. C. Barclay dress- ed like the captain, only with a chef's hat and W.L. apron! She “sailed” in a boat which was decorated with many plastic flowers made by some of the ladies. Members expressed their thanks to Mrs. N. Larsen for all her work in organizing mem- bers for serving in the Hot & Cold Booth ‘during the Labor Day activities; Mrs, V. Lister for the use of her yard for the annual supper in June; Mrs. M. Gustufson for her work to- wards obtaining a grant to have renovations done to the W.I. Hall; and a note will be sent to D. Hird thanking him for the loan of his boat for the Labor Day Parade. Members were advised that the District Fall Workshop will be held on Oct. 4 in the’ Robson Hall at Robson. Several members reported that they were taking the cera- mics course being held in the Senior Citizens’ Hall once a week. The meeting closed with the reading of a letter received from the institute's foster child in Haiti. Tea was served by Mrs. J. Winje and- Mrs. P. Simmons and tea time raffle winner was Mrs. N. Be sure that booster injections and vaccina- tions are given as often as they are recommended, both before and during school life. Adults need to have a booster every five to 10 years to keep up their level of immunity. Alpha Phi Starts Season - With a Swim Alpha Phi sorority started off the year with a Beginning Day Swim party Aug. 25 at the home of Brian and Mary Hun- ter. It was noted at the first regular meeting held at the home of Mrs, Doug Richards on _ Sept. 6, that the chapter was asked to participate in the Castlegar Recreational survey. Driving for Meals on Wheels will continue to be the soro- rity’s service project for the coming year. An interesting program was presented by Mrs. Jon VanVliet and Mrs. Doug Carter entitled “Are You a Stereo- type?" The program went into prejudice and stereotype, end- ing with a movie entitled “The Twitch.” The evening ended with refreshments served by hos- tesses Mrs. Glenn Akselson and Mrs, Larry Dolgopol. A wine and cheese party * was held Sept. 13 at the home of Mrs. Glenn Akselson for nine new pledges. A pleasant eve- ning was enjoyed with games and refreshments. OPEN Monday through Saturday at 8 a.m. Sunday at 4p.m. City Centre Restaurant: 4 Lin Krause Patterns as opposed to solids are basically designed to give a combination of several colors, create a mood, or visually change the dimensions . of a space, For example — if you have, several pieces of furniture that are alla solid color and have to combine these in the same room with solid colored. drapes and floor coverings the room can tend to look very bland and lack personality. Having to choose a pattern that blends or comple- ments all your colors can be a real challenge and we'll share several ways this can be done. Firstly, to give the room a certain flavor which reflects your personal tastes or hobbies consider such things as Oriental area rugs, a collection of vibrant art work, a huge Hawaiian print wall hanging, brightly patterned cushions, or wallpaper on a feature wall. If you are really creative you might try a very personal design in the form of a graphic combining the exact colors into wide lines following the archi- tectural features of the room. Don't rule out adding a valance to drapes in a pattern- ed fabric or a patterned Roman shade under drapes. Also, if furnishings are worn consider purchasing a patterned sofa or chair; or having the old “faith- ful” recovered in a pattern that combines the colors you need and don't forget to use the extra fabric for accents in the room to get a real custom effect. (These would include such things as cushions, table ‘clothes, or tie backs for drapes.) “When looking for the right pattern remember what some of the following patterns will do, As a rule plaids are very “down home.” and very appropriate for family rooms, country kitchens, boy's rooms or in the right colors give a Scottish effect. Plaids have always been used very effec- tively with Colonial style fur. niture. Florals have so much va- riety in them depending on their background and the size of the print, At the moment, most Home Fashion designers are using large bold floral prints in cottons for very plumpy over-stuffed styles. These patterns relate back to the cabbage-rose which was so popular in Grandma's parlor! Most people, though, favor a medium or small sized print which isn’t too bright or vibrant and doesn't have too many different colors but rather dif- ferent shades of the same color or very closely related colors, -Soft pastel prints are always suitable in nurseries, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Stripes are traditionally sophisticated and tend to vi- sually heighten the ceiling in a room; very suitable for base- ment bathrooms. We have all seen the combined effects of a co-ordinating stripe and pat- tern when looking through wallpaper samples and since these are designed by experts do not be afraid to use them Ardmona =. sliced Cling Peaches == «Cling Peach Halves They are cosy’ that way. Striped chairs can algo be used with printed sofas, for example, te give a real variety to a room as long as the colors are related to the total color scheme of the room. Geometric patterns are generally used in contemporary design and a bold print in say black and white can add a CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, September 21, 1978 KINNAIRD TRANSFER LTD. L.
