Al2 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, October 19, 1978 Former Rebels in there Digging The following article ap- peared in the Oct, 1 issue of The Sunday Sun In Marquette, Mich: NMU (Northern Michigan University) Wildcat hockey eoach, Rick Comley, went out Jast spring in pursuit of centers, and it looks as though his quest has ended with the acquisition of Steven Bozek (of Castlegar) and Steve Cloutier (of Toronto), _ “I'd say there's not a flip of acoin difference between Bozek and Cloutier," Comley said. "I think both will be key centers in the coming year.” Bozek has an impressive record in two seasons with his hometown Castlegar Rebels of the Kootenay International Ju- nior Hockey League. The Brit- ish Columbia team won the championship both years and Bozek was a first team All-Star selection, was chosen the team's most valuable player and was the MVP of the league playoffs for 1977-78. The softspoken freshman hopes he's found his niche at NMU. He feels he'll have no problems fitting in with the rest of the team. “Name of Their Game is Hockey STEVEN BOZEK ... real feel for game “All the guys have been really helpful and easy to get along with,” he said. “I feel a kind of personal pressure to do well for the team.” Bozek figures his strong points are scoring goals and skating. Comley tagged Bozek as the “flashiest" player in pre- season camp so far. BRIAN VERIGIN “The college game is a lot faster with more breakaway hockey," he said, “But, I'm hoping it will complement my style as a skater,” Cloutier hails from Toron- to. He spent last season with the Dixie ‘Bee Hives of the Ontario Hockey Association Provincial Junior A League. In the 1977-78 season, he led the Bee Hives in scoring and was selected to the Provincial A All-Star team, Comley has several other freshman recruits and walk-ons who look promising. Defense- man Brian Verigin, also of Castlegar, is classified as an outstanding freshman in a crop of rookies that Comley termed ++ Pl ig “He's tremendously quick,” the coach said, “He's got sound instincts and he's already a mature thinker at 17; he's got a real feel for the game.” Bozek’s interest in hockey is not a passing fancy. A player since he was six, he aspires toa professional career. For now, collegiate hockey is a path to his goal, World Famous Harlem Clowns Scheduled Here Next Week Basketball Monkeyshines! That's what loca! fans will see when the world famous Harlem Clowns bring their fan- tastie show to the Stanley Humphries Secondary School on the evening of Oct. 27. Doors will open at 6:30 for a preliminary game between SHSS and the L. V. Rogers staff. The globe-trotting Clowns have been criss-crossing the United States and Canadian provinces, as well as the rest of the world, for more than 40 years. 5 For folks who like laughs with their sports, the Harlem Clowns have all the answers. From the time they take to the floor to the tune of their theme song, “Sweet Georgia Brown" until the grand finale “baseball game” the Clowns are working their hardest to combine fancy ball handling and shooting with both planned and spontaneous humor. In their long history, the Selkirk Women Win 4-1 Over Grand Three goals slammed in during the second half of the match gave Selkirk Saints wo- men's field hockey team a 4-1 victory over the visiting Grand Forks High School squad last Thursday on the Selkirk field. Selkirk's first goal came during the first half, making ita 1-0 lead at half-time. Their three remaining markers were made during the second half, during which time Grand Forks scored their lone goal, Tanis Bourchier had two goals, while Anne Birukow and Barb Rode added singles. Two Minutes Seem Hours for Hyperactive Time seems to pass a lot more slowly for hyperactive children compared to normal children, psychiatric research- ers have found. Teachers often notice that hyperactive children have a short attention span in class- room. And researchers now say that may be because they have a distorted sense of time. In experiments conducted in Buffalo, NY, researchers had 75 normal children and 25 hyperactive children push but- tons when they thought a certain time had passed. Forks Team Selkirk players, Heather Jen- kins and Nancy Moran, were out due to leg injuries. A local field hockey tour- ney was held at Queen Eliza- beth Park in Nelson, hosted by the L. V. Rogers High School team. Participants included high schools from Penticton, Castlegar, Nelson and the Sel- kirk College team. Selkirk won two games; a 2-0 game over Stanley Hum- phries and a 1-0 game over the L, V. Rogers team. Penticton defeated Selkirk 1-0 when the visiting team scored early in the first half and shut-out Sel- kirk for the balance of the game. Selkirk College scorers in the game were Barb Rode, Diane Bartch and Resa Bour- chier. Coach Fay Fodor was pleased with the strong play of halfbacks Heather Jenkins, Laurisa Kanigan and Sharlene Martini, plus excellent play from the forwards and goalie Doris Hark. Nelson, Castlegar and Sel- kirk ended up tied for the top spot, each with two wins and one loss, The final positions were decided by goals scored, with saw Castlegar Stanley Humphries in first place, Pen- ticton Lakers second, with Sel- kirk College Saints third and Nelson fourth. Normal children six seconds for the seven- second interval, while hyper- active ones guessed nearly 11 seconds. For the 15-second test, normal children guessed nearly 12 seconds, while the hyper- active children estimated over 23 seconds had gone by. Similar results were found for the third time. The State University of New York researchers say the results clearly show large dif- ferences in time-guessing abi- lity of normal and hyperactive Help US Achieve Our Goal Clowns have played mostly for high schools, with their games usually sponsored by the Let- termen’s Club, Associated Stu- dent Body, Key Club, PTA and Girls’ League. Locally they are sponsored by the Stanley Humphries Athletic Council as a fund-rais- ing project for the present school year. Opponents have as much fun as the Clowns—because owner Al Pullins insists that his players “keep the game inter- esting.” The Wildcats are prac- ticing with 35 players, including 17 freshmen. By the time the 1978-79 season begins at home against Manitoba, Oct. 27, Comley will have narrowed the roster to 27, And NMU hockey fans can look forward to secing some fresh talent sprinkled through- out the new roster.
