Because of the island's limited access and lack of other predators, protecting the terns would be simply a matter of controlling the gulls. Lock says the wildlife service hopes this year te get permission to try discouraging the gulls from breeding. Gulls whose nests are destroyed before they lay their eggs in May probably would simply leave the island and find somewhere else to nest. Sable Island's other noteworthy bird species, the Ipswich sparrow, is doing well, Lock says. Named after the Massachussetts city in their wintering grounds, they are unique because they breed only on Sable Island. “Every summer they breed like crazy, and perhaps 15,000 or 16,000 leave the island and winter in New England,” says Lock.
