After marching down Damage to island averted Visitors' quick actions douse flames SUBMITTED Major damage on Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park last Satur- day was prevented by the prompt action of a visiting Vancouver Island family and the island ‘staff. Tony and Elaine Coley of Black Creek and their children Rebecca, Simon and Matthew were walking in the wooded area at the south end of the island when they saw the flames leaping ten feet in the air. While one of their number ran to alert island guide Debra McCracken the others tore down branches and began beating down the flames and stamping out the sparks, augmenting their efforts with water filled garbage cans from the washrooms. Three units of the Castlegar Fire Brigade and eight firemen — Captain Dick Dunlop, Lieu- tenant Ken Chernoff and Dan Scott, Larry Bosse, Don Sparks, Ike Braga, Mickey Nazaroff and Duane Monson, attended to the fire. Keeping in mind recurring difficulties with a similar fire in almost exactly the same location in the deep floor cover, the fire- men thoroughly drenched and trenched the burn area. The Castlegar Heritage Soci- ety on behalf of the Citizens of Castlegar wishes to thank the Coley family for their consider- able part in avoiding what fire chief Dick Dunlop said could have easily endangered the Chapel House. It also wished to commend Debra McCracken and Society Co-ordinator Debbie McIntosh for their coolness and dispatch in the emergency and the Castlegar Fire Brigade for its prompt and efficient response. Thanks should also go to the Engineering Ser- vices Department for recent minor but essential repairs to the causeway which enabled the fire engines to make their way to and from the island. The fire is believed to have been started by two boys whom Debra McCracken says “I'll be keeping a close eye on in the future.” 4700 COLUMBIA AVE Today!
