Herman Engberink, St. Rita's Parish We all remember what the trees looked like 3 months ago...with their bare branches they stood wait- ing for Spring. Anyone who would see trees in winter-time only, without ever seeing them with leaves or blossoms, would consider that gnarled but fruitless existence to be the reality. Isn't our human life often similar to such a tree? We are too easily content with every-day life. We try to run our rounds without putting in any efforts. The average person lacks enthusiasm and energy and excuses everything with saying: “well, such is life”. C But life is more than hibernating. We cannot live without feeling, without courage, without joy with- pa torininger ry pegs . out willingness to forgive, without productivity. : Keith Shelfontink has a few : 4 ath at t » - We cannot withdraw in our roots, we cannot refuse the leaves and the fruits. ; is Remmember:the:wards of Christ: “every tree which does not produce good fruits will be cut down and thrown on the fire.” -_ People say so easily: I am frustrated. They mean to say that their life is without fruit...has no real meaning. Many put up with this condition and feel rather comfortable about it. But that state is even less than the reality of a tree without leaves in wintertime. God has other plans for us. Already the Old Test: it says it in ison with the tree in Psalm.l. “The righteous are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in season and their leaves do not wither” God wants our lives to be rich, fulfilled and productive. But how can this happen when at middle age we often look like withered trees? To explain it further Paul uses the image of the olive tree. The tree, incl. root and branches, is Israel. The branches broken off, are the unbelieving Jews. The branches grafted in are Gentiles who believe in Christ. Sin has made us like wild branches but now we are grafted on a noble olive tree so Well-known local artist Michael Graham adds his absur- dist genius as designer of sets, props and costumes. Too many individual christians, when thinking about their com- munity, see only the bare, hard tree trunk and they fear to touch it or to come close because it wounds them and hurts. Looking at the trunk they may find no fruit and they complain...but they forget that the leaves and the fruits are produced on the branches bn but only when these branches are one with the stem and the roots. * SUNDAY SERVICES « Wesrary & Chleron'y Chae 15 am Sanday Echo Super Charch 1030 am Morn Worship - 6:30 pam Eve. You are welcome here! Pastor Stan Block 365-6317 Every active community and every christiar) who lives by what he/she believes, is a song of praise to the life-giving Spirit and they are blooming branches on the tree. Christianity blooms and produces rich fruit in Africa and Asia. What will happen to our apparently tired communities in Europe and North America? Will we be given other chance? St. Luke in ch. 13: 6-9 gives us hope. “A man said to his garden- er: for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down. Sir, the gardener replied, let it alone for-one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good, but if not, you can cut it down” The gardener is Jesus Christ who takes care of every individual. He saves what was lost and brings what is dead to new life. Wherever a person conforms his life to faith in Christ and lives by love, there the Kingdom of God is among us.
