One of Kootenay Lake's oldest and best-known family resorts, the Balfour Beach Inn, has moved into phase two of an expansion program. Twelve new family-size units, a heated indoor pool, saunas, meeting room and ex- panded lounge-dining facilities will be opened during 1979. This announcement follow- ed the firm's last expansion program two years ago of a 10-room complex and will make the third major building on the property which is located on the west arm of Kootenay Lake at Balfour, B.C. Plans have already been revealed for an additional 20 unita'to'lie' added in 1980, Mae Ne For Kootenay goers, ‘the resort has been a-popular spot for many years and the original building remains intact and in service. It houses dining faci- and game cen- tre. Owner-manager, Mike Shaver, explains the need for expansion this way, “We found over the past five years that most of our patrons preferred the motel type units rather than a campground setting and so we decided to add 32 rooms over three phases and still retain the marina, dockside, fishing complex, and the older building which is still very serviceable and an extremely attractive heritage item. The lounge expansion will enable us to add live entertainment. Shauer, his wife Anne, and his father, Ernie Shauer, have also adopted a marketing theme ~ for 1979. They are billing thé resort as “a new resort for over" 80 years”. A new logo goes along with the promotion cam: paign. The Shauer family acquired Holiday Houseboating Ltd. five years ago and now have the largest fleet of houseboats on Kootenay Lake. The lake. is ice-free year-round and they have houseboats in the water for 12 months of the year. Balfour Beach Inn is about nine miles from Ainsworth Hot Springs, a stone's throw from the Balfour-Kootenay Bay world’s longest free ferry ride and 30 minutes from an 18-hole golf course. : Winter marketing plans have also changed, and begin- ning in 1979-80 Balfour Beach Inn will be offering both cross country and downhill ski pack- ages teaming up with nearby local ski attractions.
