CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 15, 1981 Stampede’ s oldest sports rookie Sta ied racing wagons at age 70 CALGARY (CP) — The official theme, of the Calgary Stampede tiiay be Youth in Action, but ‘the rodeo's old- timers aren't ready for the glue factory yet. Some of the best recog- nized names on the chuck- wagon circuit are the sep- tuagenarians handling the reins at this year's races. Like the grand old man of the waggons, 70-year-old Tommy Dorechester, most are veterans ‘of the Stam- pede. Others:might be con- sidered thé:'world’s oldest sports rookies, Dick Dye of Loon Lake, Sask., raced. his first chuck- wagon atetle Stampede three yeard’ago at age 70. “My daughters are dead set against it,”: Dye laughed. “They don't talk to me at this time of yegrzAnd my wife is ng the devil Of course, ‘Bye had some previous experience. “Before ¥.came here to drive a wagon three years ago, my last Stampede was in 1926,” he.said. “I fancied myself a bareback rider. But I got stomped i in the chute, so I gave it up.” The colorful Dye said there are few concessions to age on the track. “I never thought I was good enough to run the Cal- gary Stampede. And damned if I didn't prove myself right in that first year. “It's damn dangerous. I rolled the wagon right on top of myself and spent 74 days in hospital three years ago.” Dorechester is a legend of the rodeo circuit. He first competed at the Stampede in 1931 and is still going, although he has eased up a bit. ASKS HIS AGE “People have been asking me about my age for years,” he said. “But you know, it wasn't until I turned 70 on the last day of May that I actually - asked myself ‘What the heck am I doing? I see other people my age doing what they do at 70 and I think I should be doing that now, too. But the thing is, I'm not sure they're having as much fun as I am.” Youngster Orville Strand- quist, 61, doesn't know what to think of his compatriots. “I can't believe those two old guys,” mused the Stet- tler, Alta., native. “I can't see myself coming here for my first Stampede at 70 years of age. Maybe I could see myself running my 50th year at 70, but that's something else again. Roller coaster fan sets new record MONTREAL (CP) — Rich- ard Rodriguez earned himself a place in the record books earlier this week by riding a double-helix steel roller coaster for'‘inére than 802 turns at Us ‘Ronde amuse- The 23. yohr-old law stu- dent at New York's Columbia University'brdke the old rec- ord set by“two young Ger- mans near’ Hiedelberg last year a ‘spdkesman for the park said. | After takifig’ a break for a medical exdniination, he re- mounted the’ spiral-shaped Buper Loop*— which turns 360 degrees’; twice on an 800-metre tircuit — in an at- tempt to ‘beat a personal 202-hour récord set on a wooden coaster in Blackpool, Bngland, last‘ year. He hopes to'accomplish the feat, which will be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Recdrds, i in about nine days, taking only a five- minute break every hour. Rodriguez has twice had his name in Guinness — in 1977 when he rode the Coney Island roller coaster for 104 hours and in 1978 when he rode one in South Carolina for 110. Both were wooden roller coasters. The New Yorker claims to have ridden 180 roller coas- ters. Before starting his latest marathon Friday, Rodriguez acknowledged that he was terrified the first time he climbed onto a New York roller coaster at age nine. “One of the things that got me into roller coaster mara- thons was the challenge to my fear,” the John Travolta look-alike said. “I’m not seared now.” He added that he has never been sick while riding a roller coaster at speeds of up to 60 kilometres an hour. !
