But if the arena is an hour from home, the parent has to wait — usually in the arena parking lot in the car where it gets cold in winter and most always is boring. But many U.S. concert promoters are now providing “quiet rooms” inside the arenas for parents to while away the hours in comfort while their sons and daughters boogie. Rolling Stone magazine calls it day care in reverse. While the sound of Bon Jovi recently pounded at the walls of the quiet room at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., a group of adults huddled over calculators and spread sheets on cloth-covered tables. Others sat on couches reading, smoking, talking, eating junk food or watching TV. Some rooms aren't as quiet as others, as the music seeps in, and some parents get miffed they can't see the groups play, but most are pleased. Most Canadian concert promoters haven't caught on to the concept, but jt’s spreading across the United States. Most arenas allow the parents in the rooms for free, but others require them to buy tickets. BILLY IDOL says his sneer is “quite natural,” but it does come in handy as a symbolic way of telling people to get lost or another unprintable variation. “There's not really that much to it, although I suppose it's always been there,” Idol told the Toronto Star. “One of the funniest things was when Playboy started calling me ‘The Lip’ because I was sneering so much. Maybe I'll call my next album Kiss of the Lip. Ha ha. . .” said Idol, who is touring Canada with British compatriots The Cult. The theme of the newspaper's recent entertainment section was Show Us Your Sneer and included an article on other famous rock sneerers, including Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson and Sid Vicious.
